Islington () is a district in the north of Greater London, England, and part of the London Borough of Islington. It is a mainly residential district of Inner London, extending from Islington's Islington#Islington High Street, High Street to Highbury Fields, encompassing the area around the busy High Street, Upper Street, Essex Road (former "Lower Street"), and Southgate Road to the east. Modern definition Islington grew as a sprawling Middlesex village along the line of the Great North Road (Great Britain), Great North Road, and has provided the name of the modern borough. This gave rise to some confusion, as neighbouring districts may also be said to be in Islington. This district is bounded by Liverpool Road to the west and City Road and Southgate Road to the south-east. Its northernmost point is in the area of Canonbury. Steve Bundred
Stephen Bundred (born 1952) is a retired Labour Party politician and public administrator in London, England. He is unusual in having had a career in party politics before holding high-ranking apolitical public offices, including as Chief Executive of Camden London Borough Council (1995–2003), Chief of Executive of the Audit Commission (2003–2010) and Chair of Monitor (2010–2014). He was a researcher for the National Union of Mineworkers. He was elected as a Labour councillor in the London Borough of Islington in a by-election in 1977 and served for one year (although his wife Kathleen was later an Islington councillor). He then stood for Labour for election to the European Parliament in 1979 for London South East, but lost to the Tory candidate. Bundred served on the Greater London Council from 1981 until its abolition in 1986, representing Islington North. 2022 Islington London Borough Council Election
The 2022 Islington London Borough Council election is due to take place on 5 May 2022. All 51 members of Islington London Borough Council will be elected. The elections will take place alongside local elections in the other London boroughs and elections to local authorities across the United Kingdom. In the previous election in 2018, the Labour Party maintained its control of the council, winning 47 out of the 48 seats with the Green Party providing the only opposition councillor, Caroline Russell. The 2014 Islington Council election took place on 22 May 2014 to elect members of Islington Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. The final result was 47 seats for the Labour Party and 1 seat for the Green Party of England and Wales. The Labour Party received 56 per cent of the vote, its highest total in Islington since 1974. 2002 Islington London Borough Council Election
The 2002 Islington Council election took place on 2 May 2002 to elect members of Islington London Borough Council in London, England. The whole council was up for election with boundary changes since the last election in 1998 reducing the number of seats by 4. The Liberal Democrats stayed in overall control of the council. Background The 1998 election saw the Liberal Democrat and Labour parties finish on 26 seats each, with Labour continuing to run the council with the mayor's casting vote. However, in December 1999 the Liberal Democrats won a majority on the council after gaining a seat from Labour in a by-election. This meant that going into the election the Liberal Democrats had 27 seats, compared to 25 for Labour. 187 candidates stood in the election for the 48 seats being contested, after boundary changes reduced the number of seats by 4. 1998 Islington London Borough Council Election
The 1998 Islington Council election took place on 7 May 1998 to elect members of Islington London Borough Council in London, England. The whole council was up for election and the Labour Party lost overall control of the council to no overall control. Election result The results saw the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties finish tied on 26 seats each, after the Liberal Democrats gained 12 seats. The Liberal Democrat gains included taking the ward of Barnsbury, where the then Prime Minister Tony Blair had lived before becoming Prime Minister. In the final seat Labour won by 3 votes after 5 recounts to prevent the Liberal Democrats from winning a majority. This meant Labour was able to continue as the administration, relying on the casting vote of the Labour mayor Pat Haynes.
