Isle Of Man At The 2006 Commonwealth Games
The Isle of Man was represented at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne by a 36-member strong contingent, comprising 27 sportsmen and women and 9 officials. Amongst their number was the Commonwealth Games' youngest ever competitor, Olivia Rawlinson, a swimmer aged 13. The team captain was Dane Harrop, while the flag bearer was Harry Creevy, a rifle shooter. The Melbourne Cricket Ground was decorated with creatures to represent the participating countries; the Isle of Man's creature is a basking shark, owing to the high number of sightings of the species in Manx waters. At the 2006 Games, the Isle of Man finished in joint-nineteenth place, winning two medals, including a gold, won by Mark Cavendish. David Walton (born 10 April 1973 in Bedlington, Northumberland) is an English retired footballer who is remembered for his exploits at Shrewsbury Town and Crewe Alexandra where he made over 150 league appearances for both clubs. Club career Walton began his footballing career with his local North East club Ashlington. After a year at the club, he was offered his first professional contract by Sheffield United at the age of eighteen. The cycling at the 2006 Commonwealth Games was made up of three disciplines: *Track cycling * Road bicycle racing * Mountain biking The track cycling was held at the Vodafone Arena, the (road cycling) Time Trial took place on a course on the St Kilda Foreshore and Beach Road, and the State Mountain Bike Course, Lysterfield Park hosted the mountain bike event. The 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games (Welsh: Gemau Ymerodraeth Prydain a'r Gymanwlad 1958) were held in Cardiff, Wales, from 18–26 July 1958. Thirty-five nations sent a total of 1,130 athletes and 228 officials to the Cardiff Games and 23 countries and dependencies won medals, including, for the first time, Singapore, Ghana, Kenya and the Isle of Man.
