Islands Of Perth, Western Australia
Perth, Western Australia hosts a variety of unique and biologically diverse habitats found nowhere else on Earth. Many of these habitats include islands. Islands provide habitat and safe refuge for endangered native fauna as they are free of invasive species and the pressures of human development. Coastal islands of this region heavily feature limestone as their base structure, while the inland islands are predominantly made of serpentine soil. Perth
Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. It is the fourth most populous city in Australia and Oceania, with a population of 2.1 million (80% of the state) living in Greater Perth in 2020. Perth is part of the South West Land Division of Western Australia, with most of the metropolitan area on the Swan Coastal Plain between the Indian Ocean and the Darling Scarp. The city has expanded outward from the original British settlements on the Swan River, upon which the city's central business district and port of Fremantle are situated. Perth is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people, where Aboriginal Australians have lived for at least 45,000 years. Captain James Stirling founded Perth in 1829 as the administrative centre of the Swan River Colony. Trigg Island
Trigg Island is a small "island" off the coast of the suburb of Trigg in Perth, Western Australia. It is named after Henry Stirling Trigg, Superintendent of Public Works in the Colony of Western Australia from 1838 to 1851. Trigg Island is a small rocky aeolianite limestone remnant of Pleistocene dunes, better characterised as an outcrop than an island, and as such is typical of the Perth coast. It is sometimes physically joined to the beach by movements of both the sand and the tide. Trigg Island is notorious for its blue hole, located at the south end of the island. In September 1931, four men nearly died when their boat capsized near the blue hole. In May 1947, two brothers died in the blue hole, and later that year in July a nun named Sister Mary Chrysostom, and her would-be rescuer Frederick Charles Floyd, also drowned. Marmion Marine Park
The Marmion Marine Park is a protected area along and off the coast of northern Perth, Western Australia. In 1987, this park was declared the first marine park in Western Australia. The park covers an area of 10,500 ha, from Trigg Island in the south to Burns Beach in the north. Limestone reefs run parallel to the coastline and contain underwater limestone platforms and caves that hide many species of tropical fish. Several other animals visit this area regularly, including the Australian sea lion and the bottlenose dolphin. Humpback whales frequent the waters in May on their journey north. When they return between September and November, they are in breeding, making them easier to see by tourists. Little Island (Western Australia)
Little Island is a small uninhabited sand and limestone island situated in the Marmion Marine Park just off the coast of Hillarys in Perth, Western Australia. There is a small beach on the north eastern side of the island, however beaching of kayaks is not allowed and walking on the beach is discouraged. The waters around the island are a marine sanctuary, so there is always an excellent array of marine life in the area, including humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins, Australian sea lions and occasionally, wayward sea turtles. It is a site for viewing sea lions and has a snorkelling trail. Shoalwater Islands Marine Park
The Shoalwater Islands Marine Park is a protected marine park located in Western Australia and stretches from the northern point of the Garden Island Causeway to the southern point of Becher Point. The marine park is located offshore from the suburban locality of Shoalwater. Several small limestone islands are located within the boundaries of the park, including Penguin Island and Seal Island. Peron is an outer southern suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, and is located within the City of Rockingham. The suburb was gazetted in 1974. It is named for its location at Cape Peron Cape Peron is a headland at Rockingham, at the southern end of Cockburn Sound in Western Australia. Australian Sea Lion
The Australian sea lion (''Neophoca cinerea''), also known as the Australian sea-lion or Australian sealion, is a species of sea lion that is the only endemic pinniped in Australia. It is currently monotypic in the genus '' Neophoca'', with the extinct Pleistocene New Zealand sea lion '' Neophoca palatina'' the only known congener. With a population estimated at around 14,730 animals, the Wildlife Conservation Act of Western Australia (1950) has listed them as “in need of special protection”. Their Conservation status is listed as endangered. These pinnipeds are specifically known for their abnormal breeding cycles, which are varied between a 5-month breeding cycle and a 17-18 month aseasonal breeding cycle, compared to other pinnipeds which fit into a 12-month reproductive cycle.
