Islands Of Puerto Rico
This is a list of islands of Puerto Rico. The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has over 143 islands, keys, islets, and atolls. Only the main island of Puerto Rico () and the islands of Vieques (), and Culebra () are inhabited. Mona Island () has personnel from the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) stationed year-around but no private citizens inhabit it (other than overnight camping guests and nature enthusiasts). Caja de Muertos Island () is also a DNER Nature Reserve, while Desecheo Island () is a National Wildlife Refuge administrated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The other 140 islands, keys, islets and atolls are not inhabited. Some islands are privately-owned: Isla Palomino, which is rented on a long-term lease to El Conquistador Hotel, Isleta Marina, Isla de Ramos and Isla de Lobos. Fajardo Isleta Marina
Fajardo (, ) is a town and municipality -Fajardo Combined Statistical Area. Fajardo is the hub of much of the recreational boating in Puerto Rico and a popular launching port to Culebra, Vieques, and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. It is also home to the largest marina in the Caribbean, called Puerto del Rey. The town contains various hotels and inns. Offshore, near Fajardo, a few islets can be found. These are Icacos, Isla Palomino, Palominito, and Diablo, among other uninhabited coral islands and barrier reefs. History Fajardo was founded in 1760, 1773 or 1774 (depending on the authority) as Santiago de Fajardo. It was one of the locations used by the American troops to invade Puerto Rico. Cayo Norte
Cayo Norte, formerly West Key or North East Key is the largest privately owned island in Puerto Rico and is currently the property of SVI Investments, Inc. The island is located about 0.6 nautical mile (1.0 km) northeast of Culebra Island. It lies 21 nautical miles (36 km) east of Puerto Rico and 12 nautical miles (20 km) west of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The island is part of the municipality of Culebra and therein of the barrio San Isidro. It is the only privately owned island in the Culebra archipelago, and is not part of the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge as are most of the other nearby islands and keys. Isla De Cabras
Isla de Cabras (Spanish for ''goat island'') is an islet located at the entrance of the San Juan Bay in Puerto Rico. It is part of the Palo Seco barrio of the municipality of Toa Baja. Isla de Cabras is the current location of: * Fortín San Juan de la Cruz, also known as El Cañuelo. * A recently opened recreational park. * A local police firing range. Isla Verde, Puerto Rico
Isla Verde (Spanish for ''green island'') is an area of Carolina located east of Santurce (southwestern front of Piñones) next to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport above the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge. The area lies just outside the eastern border of San Juan, capital of Puerto Rico that links with the college town of Río Piedras and the residential counterpart surroundings of Hato Rey, which includes the neighborhoods of Baldrich and University Gardens revolving around Golden Mile's financial district. Morrillito
Morrillito is a small uninhabited island off the southern coast of Puerto Rico. The island is protected by the ''Reserva Natural Caja de Muertos'' natural reserve because of its native turtle traffic. Together with Caja de Muertos, Gatas, Ratones, Cardona, Isla del Frio, and Isla de Jueyes, Morrillito is one of seven islands ascribed to the municipality of Ponce. Location The island, sometimes erroneously termed a key (or, cay), is located 5.2 mi (8.4 km) south of the Puerto Rican mainland and is part of Barrio Playa ward of the Ponce, Puerto Rico, municipality. Monito Island
Monito Island (English: ''Little Mona'', es, Islote Monito) is an uninhabited island about northwest of the much larger Mona Island. ''Monito'' is the masculine diminutive form of ''Mona'' in Spanish, which also translates to ''little monkey'' in Spanish. It is one of three islands in the Mona Passage, and part of the Isla de Mona e Islote Monito ''barrio'', a subdivision of the municipality of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Isla Mata La Gata
Isla Mata la Gata is a mangrove island and tourist attraction, located off the southwest coast of Puerto Rico. Closest access from the island is by boat from the coastal village of La Parguera, in Lajas. Isla Guachinanga is a small island located in Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico. The island, which has a number of trees and ecological areas, was reportedly littered with trash as of 2013. Culebrita
Isla Culebrita (little ''Culebra'', little snake) is a small, uninhabited island off the eastern coast of Culebra, Puerto Rico and is part of the Puerto Rico Archipielago. Together with ''Cayo Botella'' off the northwestern point, and ''Pelá'' and ''Pelaita'' to the west, it belongs to the barrio Fraile of Culebra. It is a nature reserve and is part of the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge. The island is home to Culebrita Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in the Caribbean. Cabras Island Light
Isla Cabras Light, also known as Faro de Isla Cabras, was a lighthouse located on a rocky but flat islet with the same name, which sit just off the coast near Ceiba, Puerto Rico, toward the Vieques Passage. Planning and construction Fishing boats were not the only ones to cross the Vieques Passage, but also ocean-going ships. In fact, the expanse of water between Cabras Island and Vieques had become an important passway during the long duration of the Spanish colonial rule in Puerto Rico. So, when in 1869 Madrid approved the lighthouse's construction on Cabras Island, few questioned its wisdom. Gatas (Ponce)
Gatas or, more commonly, Isla de Gatas, is a small island in barrio Playa in the municipality of Ponce in southern Puerto Rico. Cayos De Caña Gorda
The Cayos de Caña Gorda ( eng, italic=yes, Caña Gorda Keys or ''Cays'') is a group of three uninhabited, mangrove-covered keys, located at off the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico. They belong to barrio Carenero of Guánica municipio. The eastern key, ''Isla Ballena'' is separated from the Puerto Rican mainland close to ''Punta Ballena'' only by a wide channel.
