Island Lake is an unincorporated community is located in the town of Big Bend, in Rusk County, Wisconsin, United States. Originally known as Burpee's Place, Island Lake is located along Wisconsin Highway 40, on the northeast shore of Island Lake, 10 miles south of the village of Bruce. The community has a Church of Christ, along with the adjacent Island Lake Cemetery. The Big Bend Town Hall is located within the community. State Trunk Highway 40 (often called Highway 40, STH-40 or WIS 40) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It runs in north–south in northwest Wisconsin from near Elk Mound to Radisson, passing through Sawyer, Rusk, Chippewa, and Dunn counties. The largest town on its route is Bloomer. Bruce is a village in Rusk County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 779 at the 2010 census. The village was founded in 1884 by the Sault Ste. Marie Land and Improvement Company. The land company was incorporated and led by the principal officers of the Minneapolis, Sault Ste. Marie and Atlantic Railway, which operated its ceremonial first train over its line to Bruce in November 1884. It was named for Alanson C. Bruce who operated a logging camp in the area. Ladysmith is a city and the county seat of Rusk County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,414 at the 2010 census. History The Ojibwe who travelled the Flambeau River called the area that would become Ladysmith ''Gakaabikijiwanan'' ("of cliffed rapids"). The city was founded in 1885 at the intersection of the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad (Soo Line) with the Flambeau River, initially named ''Flambeau Falls''.
