Islam in Hawaii organised its first official body in 1979, with the incorporation of the Muslim Students' Association of Hawaii, though the organisation had been operational as early as 1968. The group initially prayed in a cottage, before purchasing the Manoa Mosque in the 1979–1980 period. However, a 1992 study by the American Muslim Support group listed zero mosques in Hawaii in 1992. As of early 2001, the Manoa Mosque was mentioned as having a Friday Prayer attendance of 200 men, the end of Ramadan ''iftar'' meal as having 700 attendees, and the mosque itself as having 2,000 members. Population According to a 2017 estimate, there are around 5,000 Muslims living in Hawaii. This correspond to 0.34% out of population of 1,455,271. Hawaiian Muslims are racially diverse, consisting of American-born converts and those with familial ties to many regions of the world like Asia and the Middle East. Muslim Association Of Hawaii
The Muslim Association of Hawaii is a nonprofit and charitable organization or a mosque in Manoa. Ismail Elshikh is the imam of the association, and is from Cairo, Egypt. Hakim Ouansafi, from Morocco, is the Arab head of the mosque committee, and is the president of the Muslim Association of Hawaii. Rashid Abdullah is the Information officer. History The Muslim Students' Association of Hawaii was originally composed of students from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. They were members of the East West Center and came from various parts of the world: India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Malaysia and from the Middle East. Iftar ( ar, translit=Iftar Ramadan, إفطار رمضان), also known as (from , , 'breakfast'), (), is the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset. They break their fast at the time of the call to prayer (adhan) for the evening prayer. This is their second meal of the day; the daily fast during Ramadan begins immediately after the pre-dawn meal of and continues during the daylight hours, ending with sunset with the evening meal of iftar. Description Iftar is one of the religious observances of Ramadan, and is often done as a community, with Muslim people gathering to break their fast together. Islam Day (Hawaii)
Islam Day was a day of recognition for Islam and Muslims in Hawaii on September 24, 2009 designated by a symbolic resolution of the State Legislature. Establishment Hawaii House Concurrent Resolution 100 to establish the day was proposed by Lyla Berg and passed unanimously on May 6, 2009. The Hawaii Senate passed the resolution 22 to 3 to recognize "the rich religious, scientific, cultural and artistic contributions of the Islamic world". It was set for November 21 the founding of Islam, but moved to September 24 on the day Mohammad arrived in Medina in 644, allegedly because it conflicted with Aloha (Makahiki) Festivals. It was a state-designated day of recognition and not a holiday and no government funds were designated to it, to preserve the "separation of church and state". Shangri La (Doris Duke)
The Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design is housed in the former home of Doris Duke near Diamond Head just outside Honolulu, Hawaii. It is now owned and operated as a public museum of the arts and cultures of the Islamic world by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art (DDFIA). Guided tours depart from the Honolulu Museum of Art, which operates the tours in co-operation with DDFIA. Construction of Shangri La took place from 1936 to 1938, after Doris Duke's 1935 honeymoon which took her through the Islamic world. For nearly 60 years, Duke commissioned and collected artworks for the space, eventually forming a collection of over 4,000 objects. The structure was designed by Marion Sims Wyeth.
