Ishigaki Island
, also known as ''Ishigakijima'', is a Japanese island south-west of Okinawa Hontō and the second-largest island of the Yaeyama Island group, behind Iriomote Island. It is located approximately south-west of Okinawa Hontō. It is within the City of Ishigaki in Okinawa Prefecture. The city functions as the business and transport center of the archipelago. The island is served by New Ishigaki Airport, the largest airport in the Yaeyamas. Much of the island and surrounding waters including Mount Omoto and Kabira Bay are protected as part of Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park. Ishigaki Island, like the rest of Okinawa, is culturally influenced by both Japan and Taiwan due to its location, about off the north eastern coast of Taiwan. was a Japanese poet, most famous for her poem "Nameplate." She was known as the "bank clerk poet" because all of her writing was done on the side of her job as a clerk at the Industrial Bank of Japan, and her work frequently appeared in her employer's newsletter. Like her friend and contemporary Ibaragi Noriko, she was openly critical of environmental devastation, war, and nuclear power. is a Japanese curler from Fujiyoshida. Career Juniors Ishigaki played lead for the Japanese junior women's team (skipped by Sayaka Yoshimura) from 2011 to 2013 winning three straight Pacific-Asia Junior Curling Championships in the process. The team finished in 8th place at the 2011 World Junior Curling Championships, 5th place at the 2012 World Junior Curling Championships and won a bronze medal at the 2013 World Junior Curling Championships. The team also played in two Winter Universiades while Ishigaki was attending Sapporo International University. The team places fourth in 2011 and 7th in 2013. Ishigaki, Okinawa
is a city in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. It includes Ishigaki island and the Senkaku Islands territory. The city is the political, cultural, and economic center of the Yaeyama Islands. New Ishigaki Airport serves the city. As of December 2012, the city has an estimated population of 48,816 and a population density of 213 persons per km2. The total area is 229.00 km2. It is also the location of the disputed Senkaku Islands (see below in the Geography section). History The current city of Ishigaki was founded in 1908 as Yaeyama Village, an amalgamation of the Ishigaki, Ōhama, and Miyara magiri. In 1914 it was renamed to Ishigaki Village, and grew to become Ishigaki Town in 1926. Ishigaki was elevated to city status on July 10, 1947. Eitaro Ishigaki
was an American artist. Life Eitaro Ishigaki was born in Taiji, Wakayama, Japan in 1893. At the age of sixteen he emigrated to America in to live with his father in Seattle. A year later, in 1910, they moved to California, and in 1912, Ishigaki moved to San Francisco. There he met many artists, including Gertrude Boyle, and attended class at both the William Best School of Art and at the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco Institute of Art. Eitaro Ishigaki was a founding member of the John Reed Club and a member of the Federal Art Project as well. In the 1930s, he was also involved in the Artists Congress and other WPA activities. In 1937, he painted two murals at the Harlem Courthouse, ''American Independence'' and ''Emancipation''. In 1938, the New York City Council ruled both of them offensive and murals were removed. Ayako Ishigaki
was an Issei journalist, activist, and feminist, who was among the first Japanese American women to publish a memoir in English. Life She was born Tanaka Ayako in Tokyo, Japan in 1903, the daughter of a college professor. During the 1920s, she became active in politics. While in the United States, she became friends with writers Pearl S. Buck, Helen Kuo, and Agnes Smedley and artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi. Tanaka first came to the United States in 1926, accompanying her sister, whose husband, a diplomat, was posted to Washington, D.C. Soon after, she moved to New York City, where she audited courses at Columbia University. In New York, she met the painter Eitaro Ishigaki, whom she would marry in 1931. Following the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931, Ishigaki became outspoken in protesting the Japanese military aggression in China, and reported on Japan for the left-wing magazine ''The New Masses''.
