Isaäk Martinus Van Der Vlerk
Isaäk Martinus van der Vlerk (31 January 1892 – 29 June 1974) was a Dutch paleontologist and geologist who worked in Dutch Indonesia where he was involved in stratigraphic studies based on foraminifera. He applied morphometric studies, examining curvature in foraminifera as a criterion, for determining geological ages of strata. Biography Van der Vlerk was born in Utrecht, and moved to Groningen in 1914 where he studied geology under J.H. Bonnema. After his bachelor's degree he moved to study geology at the University of Basel influenced by August Tobler he started examining fossil foraminifera for dating. His 1922 PhD was under Karl Martin and examined the stratigraphy of Sumbawa in the Dutch East Indies. He then worked with the mining service, working on mapping in Java and Sumatra. Foraminifera
Foraminifera (; Latin for "hole bearers"; informally called "forams") are single-celled organisms, members of a phylum or class of amoeboid protists characterized by streaming granular Ectoplasm (cell biology), ectoplasm for catching food and other uses; and commonly an external shell (called a "Test (biology), test") of diverse forms and materials. Tests of chitin (found in some simple genera, and Textularia in particular) are believed to be the most primitive type. Most foraminifera are marine, the majority of which live on or within the seafloor sediment (i.e., are benthos, benthic), while a smaller number float in the water column at various depths (i.e., are planktonic), which belong to the suborder Globigerinina. Morphometrics
Morphometrics (from Greek μορϕή ''morphe'', "shape, form", and -μετρία ''metria'', "measurement") or morphometry refers to the quantitative analysis of ''form'', a concept that encompasses size and shape. Morphometric analyses are commonly performed on organisms, and are useful in analyzing their fossil record, the impact of mutations on shape, developmental changes in form, covariances between ecological factors and shape, as well for estimating quantitative-genetic parameters of shape. Morphometrics can be used to quantify a trait of evolutionary significance, and by detecting changes in the shape, deduce something of their ontogeny, function or evolutionary relationships. A major objective of morphometrics is to statistically test hypotheses about the factors that affect shape. August Tobler
August Tobler (29 April 1872 – 23 November 1929) was a Swiss geologist who worked extensively in Sumatra while working for Dutch oil companies examining the geology of the region using micropaleontology of sediments. Education Tobler was born in Basel where his father was a high school teacher. Educated at the University of Basel, he was influenced by Carl Schmidt (1862–1923) and went to study under Karl von Zittel at Munich and with August Rothpletz. Tobler then worked as an assistant to Schmidt in Basel, travelling to the US and Russia before writing his habilitation and becoming a lecturer at the University of Basel from 1899. Career From 1900 to 1903, he worked for the Royal Dutch Shell oil company in South Sumatra. Johannes Herman Frederik Umbgrove
Johannes Herman Frederik Umbgrove HFRSE (5 February 1899 Hulsberg (Limburg) – 14 June 1954 Wassenaar), called in short Jan Umbgrove, was a Dutch geologist and earth scientist. Life Umbgrove studied geology at Leiden University, he finished his studies in 1926. He then became employed as a paleontologist for the (Geological Survey of the Dutch East Indies), where he studied Tertiary foraminifera and corals. He also studied volcanoes, tectonics, coastal morphology and the bathymetry of the seas surrounding the Sunda Islands. From 1929 he went back to Leiden to become the assistant of his former teacher B.G. Escher. In 1930 he became professor in stratigraphy and paleontology at Delft University. Rijksmuseum Van Natuurlijke Historie
The Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (National Museum of Natural History) was a museum on the Rapenburg in Leiden, the Netherlands. It was founded in 1820 by Royal Decree from a merger of several existing collections. This happened on the initiative of Coenraad Jacob Temminck, who saw the museum primarily as a research institute for the University of Leiden. The total collection was already quite large at the time, and continued to grow from foreign expeditions and by obtaining private collections from inheritances. The location is currently used by the ''Rijksmuseum van Oudheden''. History The location was originally a hofje called ''Hof van Zessen''.
