Isabel Province
Isabel Province (also spelled Ysabel) is one of the provinces of Solomon Islands. The province had a population of around 35,257 as of 2020, mostly concentrated on the main island, Santa Isabel Island. The capital of the province is Buala on Santa Isabel Island, which has scheduled airline services to Honiara on Solomon Airlines from Fera Airport, on Fera Island, a 15-minute boat ride from Buala. The province has an economy dominated by subsistence agriculture with occasional plantations for cash crops such as copra, and by logging activities. The province is seldom visited by tourists due to poor infrastructure, lack of roads, hotels, modern medical care, and endemic malaria. Most areas have a "Rest House", a house where guests can seek accommodation for the night or two, but many residents are willing to take in visitors for the night. Álvaro De Mendaña De Neira
Álvaro de Mendaña y Neira (or Neyra) (1 October 1542 – 18 October 1595) was a Spanish navigator and discoverer, best known for two of the earliest recorded expeditions across the Pacific in 1567 and 1595. His voyages led to the discovery of the Marquesas, Cook Islands and Solomons among other archipelagos. Born in Congosto, in El Bierzo Region ( León), he was the nephew of Lope García de Castro, viceroy of Peru. Search for Terra Australis Between 1565 and 1605, three important Spanish voyages of exploration left Peru bound for the southwest Pacific. One inspiration for these voyages was Spanish soldier Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa who arrived in Peru in 1557. San Jorge Island
San Jorge Island is the second largest island in the Isabel Province, Solomon Islands. Geography The terrain elevation above sea level has been estimated at about 159 metres, but SRTM data shows a maximum elevation of about 470 metres. The island lies at the southern end of Santa Isabel Island and borders Thousand Ships Bay. San Jorge has an area of and has less than 1000 inhabitants living in four villages. Malaria
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that affects humans and other animals. Malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, tiredness, vomiting, and headaches. Buala
Buala is a town in Solomon Islands located on Santa Isabel Island, which is the longest island in Solomon Islands. Buala consists of Jejevo station and Buala Village. Buala is located on a side of a hill so there is no place for the town to expand, new feeder roads have been continuously developed to the east and western ends of the township. One of these roads reached as far as Hovokiolo village in the west Maringe district. Kubolota, Tithiro, and Maglau are villages close to this small town. Higher up inland, are Tirotogna, Bara, Gurena and Kolokofa. People from these villages also frequent Buala town. The highest point, Mt Kubonitu, can be reached with the help of some tour guide from Tirotogna and Bara village. This peak is close to these two villages.
