Isaac Slover
Isaac Slover (1780–1854) was an American 19th century fur trader. He was one of the first American trappers officially allowed into New Mexico, as part of the Glenn-Fowler Expedition of Hugh Glenn and Jacob Fowler. He was one of the first trappers to take up formal residence at Taos, New Mexico. Slover is known for his association with many other trappers in the American Southwest, including Ewing Young and William Wolfskill working the tributaries of the Colorado River in 1824, and with James Ohio Pattie and his father Sylvester Pattie on the Gila River and Lower Colorado River in 1828. Seeking food and water they cached their furs and went west to Baja California where they were arrested and imprisoned at San Diego from late 1828 to 1829. Fur Trader
The fur trade is a worldwide industry dealing in the acquisition and sale of animal fur. Since the establishment of a world fur market in the early modern period, furs of boreal, polar and cold temperate mammalian animals have been the most valued. Historically the trade stimulated the exploration and colonization of Siberia, northern North America, and the South Shetland and South Sandwich Islands. Today the importance of the fur trade has diminished; it is based on pelts produced at fur farms and regulated fur-bearer trapping, but has become controversial. Animal rights organizations oppose the fur trade, citing that animals are brutally killed and sometimes skinned alive. Fur has been replaced in some clothing by synthetic imitations, for example, as in ruffs on hoods of parkas. Slover Mountain
Slover Mountain (Mount Slover, Marble Mountain) is a former mountain in Colton, in southwestern San Bernardino County and the Inland Empire region of Southern California. Now a hill, it was surface mined for limestone in the 20th century. The Colton Joint Unified School District's continuation high school is named after the mountain. The mountain was known as Tahualtapa ("raven hill") by Native Americans and Cerrito Solo ("little solitary hill") by the colonial Spanish. History The hill was named after a local 19th century hunter, Isaac Slover, who lived near it and who died in 1854 in the Cajon Pass from injuries caused by a bear. Agua Mansa, California
Agua Mansa ("gentle water") is a former settlement in an unincorporated area of San Bernardino County, near Colton, California, United States. Once the largest settlement in San Bernardino County, it is now a ghost town. Only the cemetery remains. The town was established in 1842 in early California Alta California. It was on the Santa Ana River, across from the era settlement of La Placita. Agua Mansa and La Placita were the first non-native settlements in the San Bernardino Valley. Together known as "San Salvador", they were also the largest settlements between Santa Fe de Nuevo México and the Pueblo de Los Ángeles in the 1840s. Old Spanish Trail (trade Route)
The Old Spanish Trail ( es, Viejo Sendero Español) is a historical trade route that connected the northern New Mexico settlements of (or near) Santa Fe, New Mexico with those of Los Angeles, California and southern California. Approximately long, the trail ran through areas of high mountains, arid deserts, and deep canyons. It is considered one of the most arduous of all trade routes ever established in the United States. Explored, in part, by Spanish explorers as early as the late 16th century, the trail was extensively used by traders with pack trains from about 1830 until the mid-1850s. The name of the trail comes from the publication of John C. Frémont’s Report of his 1844 journey for the U.S. Topographical Corps, guided by Kit Carson, from California to New Mexico.
