Isa Degener
Isa Irmgard Degener née Hansen (April 27, 1924, Berlin – April 13, 2018, Waialua, Hawaii) was a German-American plant collector and botanist, specializing in agrostology. She is known as the coauthor of ''Flora Hawaiiensis''. Isa Hansen studied botany at the University of Berlin and worked there as an assistant to Hermann Otto Sleumer and Erich Werdermann. Later she worked at the Berlin Botanical Garden and specialized in the grasses. In 1952 she met Otto Degener, who had come to Berlin in search of a grass expert. They began a correspondence and married in January 1953. The couple worked together, collecting botanical specimens in the Hawaiian Islands. They also made an important expedition to Polynesia. Otto and Isa Degener were associated with the New York Botanical Garden for many years. Waialua, Hawaii
Waialua () is a census-designated place and North Shore community in the Waialua District on the island of Oahu, City & County of Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. As of the 2020 census, the CDP had a population of 4,062. Waialua was one of the six original districts of ancient Hawaii on the island, known as ''moku''. Waialua is a former (sugar) mill town and residential area, quite different in its quiet ambiance from nearby Haleiwa, which is more commercial and tourist oriented. Agrostology
Agrostology (from Greek , ''agrōstis'', "type of grass"; and , ''-logia''), sometimes graminology, is the scientific study of the grasses (the family Poaceae, or Gramineae). The grasslike species of the sedge family (Cyperaceae), the rush family (Juncaceae), and the bulrush or cattail family (Typhaceae) are often included with the true grasses in the category of graminoid, although strictly speaking these are not included within the study of agrostology. In contrast to the word graminoid, the words gramineous and graminaceous are normally used to mean "of, or relating to, the true grasses (Poaceae)". Agrostology has importance in the maintenance of wild and grazed grasslands, agriculture (crop plants such as rice, maize, sugarcane, and wheat are grasses, and many types of animal fodder are grasses), urban and environmental horticulture, turfgrass management and sod production, ecology, and conservation. International Botanical Congress
International Botanical Congress (IBC) is an international meeting of botanists in all scientific fields, authorized by the International Association of Botanical and Mycological Societies (IABMS) and held every six years, with the location rotating between different continents. The current numbering system for the congresses starts from the year 1900; the XVIII IBC was held in Melbourne, Australia, 24–30 July 2011, and the XIX IBC was held in Shenzhen, China, 23–29 July 2017. The IBC has the power to alter the ICN ( International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants), which was renamed from the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) at the XVIII IBC.
