Irving Resnikoff
Irving Resnikoff, alias Charles J. Fox (1897–1988) was a Russian-born painter who emigrated to the United States. He is known for the many portraits of prominent politicians and business people that he painted under commission to the art dealer Leo Fox. Life Irving Resnikoff was born in Russia in 1897, and studied art at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. He trained as a Cubist painter. During the Russian Revolution of 1917 he fled from Russia. In 1923 he arrived in New York City. He was not able to make a living by selling his abstract paintings, and instead made portraits in the conventional style expected at that time. Leo Fox was the son of an artist who died in 1944. He became a well-connected art dealer in Miami and Long Island. In 1943 Fox proposed that Congress set up a government portrait commission. Wilber Marion Brucker (June 23, 1894 – October 28, 1968) was an American Republican politician. Born in Saginaw, Michigan, he served as the 32nd governor of Michigan from 1931 to 1933 and as the United States Secretary of the Army between July 21, 1955 and January 19, 1961. Early life Brucker was born in Saginaw, Michigan, the son of Democratic U.S. Representative Ferdinand Brucker. He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1916 and enlisted in the Michigan National Guard, serving with its 33rd Infantry Regiment on the Mexican border during the Pancho Villa Expedition from 1916 to 1917. Clarence Andrew Cannon (April 11, 1879 – May 12, 1964) was a Democratic Congressman from Missouri serving from 1923 until his death in Washington, D.C. in 1964. Elvis Jacob Stahr Jr. (March 9, 1916 – November 11, 1998) was an American government official and college president and administrator. After graduating from the University of Kentucky in 1936 as a member of Sigma Chi and Pershing Rifles, he attended Merton College at the University of Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship. Lewis Blaine Hershey (September 12, 1893May 20, 1977) was a United States Army general who served as the second Director of the Selective Service System, the means by which the United States administers its military conscription.
