Irvin Abernathy
Irvin Valentine Abernathy (August 23, 1852 – February 4, 1925) was a Democratic member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, representing Chickasaw County, from 1916 until his death. Biography Irvin Valentine Abernathy was born on August 23, 1852, in Troy, Mississippi. His parents were Marion Abernathy and Martha (Wilson) Abernathy. He married Mary Jane Laughlin in 1882. Before becoming a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, he was a member of the Board of Supervisors of Chickasaw County, and was a public cotton weigher for 10 years. He was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives, representing Chickasaw County as a Democrat, in November 1915, for the 1916–1920 term. He was re-elected in November 1919. He was re-elected once more in November 1923. Chickasaw County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,392. Its county seats are Houston and Okolona. The county is named for the Chickasaw people, who lived in this area for hundreds of years. Most were forcibly removed to Indian Territory in the 1830s, but some remained and became citizens of the state and the United States. History The Mississippi state legislature created Chickasaw County in 1836, following the cession of the land by the Chickasaw Indians. It was quickly settled by Americans from the east, mainly from the Southern states. By the time of the Civil War, riverfront landings had been developed by the many large cotton plantations worked by slaves, who outnumbered the white residents of the county. The American Civil War devastated the local economy, completely destroying the plantation-based infrastructure of Chickasaw County. Troy, Mississippi
Troy is an unincorporated community in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, around the intersection of Mississippi Highway 41 and County Road 82, roughly two miles west of the Natchez Trace Parkway, due west of Shannon. History Troy was established in the 1830s at a site about two miles north of its present coordinates (later referred to as Old Troy), and moved to its current location in 1881. In the late 1800s, this was the site of Troy Normal College, which at times was also known as Mississippi Normal College. The college was founded by professor H.B. Abernethy in 1882. but moved to Houston in 1888. Troy is also the site of a Civil War Union Cemetery containing several unmarked graves. Mississippi House Of Representatives
The Mississippi House of Representatives is the lower house of the Mississippi Legislature, the lawmaking body of the U.S. state of Mississippi. According to the state constitution of 1890, it is to comprise no more than 122 members elected for four-year terms. To qualify as a member of the House candidates must be at least 21 years old, a resident of Mississippi for at least four years, and a resident in the district for at least two years. Elections are held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
