Iroquois, Louisville
Iroquois is a neighborhood on the south side of Louisville, Kentucky, United States. It is split into two parts by Beechmont. From a historical perspective, the northwestern section would be the Bryn Mawr neighborhood and the southeastern section would be the Kenwood neighborhood. The Iroquois neighborhood is roughly bounded by Hazelwood Avenue, Beechmont, Third Street, Kenwood Drive, and Iroquois Park. Located near the Louisville International Airport, residents have frequently complained of noise and challenged airport expansion. The largely residential neighborhood was developed as a suburb after World War II and into the 1950s. The notorious Iroquois Tenement Housing Complex was torn down in 2012 and replaced with the Hope Garden Project, an urban farming collaboration involving KentuckyOne Health, the Food Literacy Project and the Metro Housing Authority. Louisville, Kentucky
Louisville ( , , ) is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the 28th most-populous city in the United States. Louisville is the historical seat and, since 2003, the nominal seat of Jefferson County, on the Indiana border. Beechmont, Louisville
Beechmont is a neighborhood in the south end of Louisville, Kentucky. Its modern boundaries are I-264 to the north, Taylor Boulevard to the west, Southern Parkway and Southland Boulevard to the south, and Third Street, Allmond and Louisville Avenues to the east. Iroquois Park is located to its southwest. The park, purchased by Louisville Mayor Charles Donald Jacob in 1889 and completed in 1893, was connected to the city by Southern Parkway (originally called Grand Boulevard), in a master plan designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Much like Shawnee Park spurred development in the Shawnee neighborhood, Iroquois Park contributed to making Beechmont a desirable suburb as it was developed in the 1890s. Iroquois Park
Iroquois Park is a 725-acre (3.0 km²) municipal park in Louisville, Kentucky, United States. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed Louisville's Cherokee Park and Shawnee Park, at what were then the edges of the city. Located south of downtown, Iroquois Park was promoted as "Louisville's Yellowstone". It is built on a large knob covered with old growth forest, and its most prominent feature are the scenic viewpoints atop the hill. The summit of Iroquois Park presents an all-at-once vista of the city of Louisville, seen from the south. A bronze plaque at the site demonstrates the plan of the city's park and parkway system as planned and executed by Olmsted's firm. Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport , formerly known as simply Louisville International Airport, is a civil-military airport in Louisville in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The airport covers and has three runways. Its IATA airport code, SDF, is based on the airport's former name, Standiford Field. The Little Loomhouse
The Little Loomhouse is a place on the National Register of Historic Places in the Kenwood Hill neighborhood on the south side of Louisville, Kentucky. It consists of three cabins constructed between 1870 and 1896: Esta Cabin, Tophouse, and Wisteria Cabin. It not only displays weavings, but has active education and resident artist programs. The organization participates in several local festivals, giving demonstrations of spinning, dyeing, and weaving. It is the biggest repository of original and classic textile patterns in the United States. Among the history of the cabins have been the visits of past First Ladies of the United States, and the composition of the song ''Happy Birthday to You''. The Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL) is the public library system in Louisville, Kentucky, and the largest public library system in the U.S. state of Kentucky. History Formation The Louisville Free Public Library was created in 1902 by an act of the Kentucky State Legislature, and in 1904 it merged with the Polytechnic Society. Services began in 1905 when the Polytechnic Society's collection, held in the top floors of the Kenyon Building, was open to the public. Kenwood Hill, Louisville
Kenwood Hill is a hill and neighborhood on the south side of Louisville, Kentucky, United States. Its boundaries are New Cut Road, Kenwood Drive, Southside Drive and Palatka Road. The hill, earlier known as ''Sunshine Hill'' and then ''Cox's Knob'', was used by Native Americans to spot buffalo. By 1868 Benoni Figg owned the area as a part of his charcoal business. His family oversaw development on the land until it was sold in 1890 to a development company which named the area Kenwood Hill. Southern Parkway (initially called Grand Boulevard) was opened soon after in 1893. In 1893, Kenwood Hill residents Patty and Mildred J. Hill composed the song "Good Morning to All", which was to become "Happy Birthday to You". While wealthy Louisvillians built summer homes in the area, and the first subdivision did not begin until 1942, the neighborhood was widely developed by the 1960s, so much so that extensive work was needed to halt erosion on the hill in the 1980s. Colonial Gardens
Colonial Gardens is a former entertainment complex located in the Kenwood Hill neighborhood across New Cut Road from Iroquois Park in Louisville, Kentucky. In its early existence, it was a part of Senning's Park, the site of the first zoo in Louisville. Beginnings as Senning's Park Senning's Park was started in 1902 by a German immigrant to Louisville from Kesse, Germany named Frederick Carl Senning, who immigrated to the city in 1868. Prior to opening the park, he and his wife Minnie founded the Senning Hotel at 2nd and Jefferson in downtown Louisville, as well as the first bowling alley in Louisville, at the corner of 8th and Main, also in downtown. The park started on two and a half acres owned by Fredrika Oswald before he died. It benefited from being only a block from the loop that electric streetcars used on Fourth Street. Southside is a neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky, United States. Its boundaries are Third Street to the west, Woodlawn Avenue, Allmond Avenue and Hiawatha Avenue to the north, the CSX railroad tracks to the east, and the southern boundary of the Greater Louisville Technology Park Naval Ordnance Station Louisville ("NOSL") is a major employer of Louisville, Kentucky, near Standiford Field.
