Irmengard Rauch
Irmengard Rauch (born 1933 in Dayton, Ohio) is a linguist and semiotician. She is Professor Emeritus of Germanic Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, where she held a position in the Department of German from 1982 until her retirement. She earned her PhD from the University of Michigan in 1962. Her dissertation was published by Mouton in 1967 under the title, ''The Old High German Diphthongization: a description of a phonemic change''. She held positions at the University of Illinois (1968–82); the University of Pittsburgh (1966–68); the Univ. of Wisconsin (1962–66) before coming to Berkeley. Dayton, Ohio
Dayton () is the sixth-largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Montgomery County. A small part of the city extends into Greene County. The 2020 U.S. census estimate put the city population at 137,644, while Greater Dayton was estimated to be at 814,049 residents. The Combined Statistical Area (CSA) was 1,086,512. Guggenheim Fellowships are grants that have been awarded annually since by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to those "who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts." The Semiotic Society of America is an interdisciplinary professional association serving scholars from many disciplines with common interests in semiotics, the study of signs and sign-systems.
