First organised in 2001, the festival is headlined by the Irish Masters main event, a Texas hold'em tournament, and typically takes place over the three days of the October bank holiday weekend. It was run as a stand-alone festival in Dublin’s famous Merrion Club from 2001 to 2003 and as the Dublin leg of the European Poker Tour (EPT) from 2004 to 2007. Some of the most famous poker players in the world have recorded impressive results at the Irish Winter Festival in previous years, particularly in the Irish Masters main event. William Thorson
William Thorson (born c. 1983) is a Swedish professional poker player from Varberg, Sweden and a three time European Poker Tour (EPT) final table participant who, in the 2006 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, finished in 13th place. In 2012, Thorson disappeared from the poker scene. In 2014, it was publicly confirmed that Thorson found a job at the Casa Blanca club in Barcelona, leaving poker behind. Andy Black (poker Player)
Andrew Black (born 20 July 1965) is a poker player from Belfast, Northern Ireland, who presently resides in Dublin. Early Life Black played cards with his mother when he was younger. He began playing more seriously in 1986, whilst he was studying for a law degree at Trinity College, Dublin. He also began playing in the Griffin Casino in Dublin, reportedly because of the free food and coffee. Willie Tann is an English professional poker player. Tann was born in Singapore and moved to England to study law in the 1960s. Tann made one appearance on the original televised poker show Late Night Poker, finishing 3rd in his heat behind Padraig Parkinson and Ken Lennaárd. In later years he would also play in the European Poker Tour. Tann mentored Zac Goldsmith (editor of ''The Ecologist'') in poker, leading Goldsmith to his 3rd-place finish in the 2004 Poker Million.
