Irish Mathematical Society
The Irish Mathematical Society ( ga, Cumann Matamaitice na hÉireann) or IMS is the main professional organisation for mathematicians in Ireland. The society aims to further mathematics and mathematical research in Ireland. Its membership is international, but it mainly represents mathematicians in universities and other third level institutes in Ireland. It publishes a bulletin, ''The Bulletin of the Irish Mathematical Society'', twice per year and runs an annual conference in September. The society was founded on 14 April 1976 at a meeting in Trinity College, Dublin when a constitution drafted by D McQuillan, John T. Lewis and Trevor West was accepted. It is a member organization in the European Mathematical Society. University Of Limerick
The University of Limerick (UL) ( ga, Ollscoil Luimnigh) is a public research university institution in Limerick, Ireland. Founded in 1972 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick, it became a university in 1989 in accordance with the University of Limerick Act 1989. It was the first university established since Irish independence in 1922, followed by the establishment of Dublin City University later the same day. Mathematical Societies
Mathematics is an area of knowledge that includes the topics of numbers, formulas and related structures, shapes and the spaces in which they are contained, and quantities and their changes. These topics are represented in modern mathematics with the major subdisciplines of number theory, algebra, geometry, and analysis, respectively. Learning is the process of acquiring new understanding, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences. St Patrick's College, Dublin
St Patrick's College ( ga, Coláiste Phádraig), often known as St Pat's, was a third level institution in Ireland, the leading function of which was as the country's largest primary teacher training college, which had at one time up to 2,000 students. Founded in Drumcondra, in the northern suburbs of Dublin, in 1875, with a Roman Catholic ethos, it offered a number of undergraduate courses, primarily in primary education and arts, and in time postgraduate courses too, mostly in education and languages. Pauline Mellon
Pauline E. Mellon is an Irish mathematician who works as a professor of mathematics at University College Dublin. Her research specialties include functional analysis, the theory of Banach spaces, and the symmetries of manifolds. From 2019 to 2020 she was president of the Irish Mathematical Society and has been a member of the Royal Irish Academy's Physical, Chemical and Mathematical Sciences committee. Mellon was born in Avoca, County Wicklow. She did her undergraduate studies at University College Dublin, and performed research both at the University of Tübingen and at University College Dublin as part of her graduate studies. Mary Immaculate College (Coláiste Mhuire gan Smál), also known as MIC and Mary I, is a College of Education and Liberal Arts. Tony O'Farrell
Tony O'Farrell (born Anthony G. O'Farrell in 1947 in Dublin) is an Irish mathematician who is Professor Emeritus at Maynooth University. He has been in the Mathematics and Statistics Department there since 1975. Early life He was born in Dublin and grew up there and in Tipperary. Education and career He attended University College Dublin (UCD) earning a BSc in mathematical science (1967). After a year working for the Irish Meteorological Service, he returned to UCD for his MSc (1969). He then moved to the USA, to Brown University from which he earned a PhD in 1973, for a thesis on "Capacities in Uniform Approximation" done under Brian Cole.
