Irish Language Movement
The following is a list of Irish language organisations who form part of the Irish Language Movement. There is no coordinating organisation or body for the entire movement. Up until 2014 Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge (The National Irish Language Congress) was the coordinating body of most of the Irish language movement on the island of Ireland but a new funding scheme implemented that year by Foras na Gaeilge ended funding to half of the organisations under Comhdháil's remit, including Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge itself. As part of the same new funding process six funded lead organisations were announced by Foras na Gaeilge with extra funding. These are: Gael Linn, Gaeloideachas, Cumann na bhFiann, Conradh na Gaeilge, Oireachtas na Gaeilge and Glór na nGael. Comhdháil Náisiúnta Na Gaeilge
Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge (CNnaG) was the central steering council for a number of organisations involved in the promotion of the Irish language. Its mission was to "strengthen and consolidate goodwill and support for the Irish language and its usage as a living language so that it may be used freely and widely in all aspects of Irish life". History The organisation was established in 1943. It was set up to act as a coordinating umbrella body for voluntary Irish language organisations. The board of the not-for-profit organisation was made up of representatives of its member organisations. As of 2011, there were 24 member organisations, including Conradh na Gaeilge, Gael Linn, Gael-Taca and Oireachtas na Gaeilge. Good Friday Agreement
The Good Friday Agreement (GFA), or Belfast Agreement ( ga, Comhaontú Aoine an Chéasta or ; Ulster-Scots: or ), is a pair of agreements signed on 10 April 1998 that ended most of the violence of The Troubles, a political conflict in Northern Ireland that had prevailed since the late 1960s. It was a major development in the Northern Ireland peace process of the 1990s. It is made up of the Multi-Party Agreement between most of Northern Ireland's political parties, and the BritishIrish Agreement between the British and Irish governments. Northern Ireland's present devolved system of government is based on the agreement. Issues relating to sovereignty, governance, discrimination, military and paramilitary groups, justice and policing were central to the agreement. An Coimisinéir Teanga
The Coimisinéir Teanga (English: ''Language Commissioner'') is an office created by the Acht na dTeangacha Oifigiúla 2003 (English: ''Official Languages Act'') in the Republic of Ireland to promote and safeguard the respective language rights of Irish and English speakers in Ireland. The Coimisinéir is appointed by President of Ireland. Role The Coimisinéir's job is mainly to police the articles of the Act, which gives legislative force to the Irish Constitution's definition of Irish as the country's "First Official Language" and English as the "second official language". The Coimisinéir's office develops language plans for public bodies to ensure that they fulfill their responsibilities to speakers of both official languages. Irish Language
Irish ( Standard Irish: ), also known as Gaelic, is a Goidelic language of the Insular Celtic branch of the Celtic language family, which is a part of the Indo-European language family. Irish is indigenous to the island of Ireland and was the population's first language until the 19th century, when English gradually became dominant, particularly in the last decades of the century. Irish is still spoken as a first language in a small number of areas of certain counties such as Cork, Donegal, Galway, and Kerry, as well as smaller areas of counties Mayo, Meath, and Waterford. It is also spoken by a larger group of habitual but non-traditional speakers, mostly in urban areas where the majority are second-language speakers. Forbairt Naíonraí Teoranta
Forbairt Naíonraí Teoranta (''FNT'', English: ''Pre-school Development Foundation'') was a voluntary organisation that worked to encourage the development of Irish language childcare and education services throughout Ireland. They were based in Dublin, Ireland. Forbairt Naíonraí Teoranta and funded by Foras na Gaeilge' and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs. History Forbairt Naíonraí Teoranta was founded in 2003 by Na Naíonraí Gaelacha and Bord na Gaeilge (now Foras na Gaeilge), to act as a successor to An Comhchoiste Réamhscolaíochta, which was set up in 1978. While An Comhchoiste looked after the country as a whole, FNTs consisted of all areas outside the Gaeltacht, with Comhar Naíonraí na Gaeltachta' operating in the Gaeltacht regions. POBAL
Pobal (English: ''Community'') is an organisation in the Republic of Ireland with responsibility for administering and managing government and EU funding aimed at supporting social inclusion and addressing social disadvantage in the state. While the organisation is registered with the Charities Regulator, its charitable status was queried in 2018. Background and activities Pobal was established in 1992 by the Irish Government, in agreement with the European Commission, to manage an EU grant for local development. Glór Na NGael
Glór na nGael (; "voice of the Gaels") is an Irish-language organisation funded by Foras na Gaeilge which promotes Irish in three sectors: the family, community development, and business. It was established as a competition between community groups in 1961, and Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich and Monsignor Pádraig Ó Fiannachta were among its founders. The competition has grown over the years and encompasses both community groups and third-level college groups as well as an international element (Global Gaeilge) and since 2014 a project with the Gaelic Athletic Association to promote Irish in GAA Clubs, called ''An Turas Teanga'' (the language journey). Gaillimh Le Gaeilge
Gaillimh le Gaeilge is a Galway City-based Irish language organisation who work to promote the Irish language in Galway City particularly in the business sector. They were established in 1987. They work with Galway City Council, Galway Chamber and other groups to develop and strengthen Galway City's official status as Ireland's only bilingual city. Their main schemes include ‘Cairde Ghaillimh le Gaeilge’, ‘Gaeilge sa Ghnó’ business service, ‘Irish on Menus’ and ‘Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh’. Gael-Taca
Gael-Taca is an Irish language promotional organisation in County Cork in the Republic of Ireland. They are based on Sullivan's Quay in Cork City where they run a shop and café. The organisation focuses on promoting the Irish language in the business sector and on trying to expand the number of Irish language immersion schools or Gaelscoileanna in County Cork. History The group was established in 1987 by Pádraig Ó Cuanacháin who remained their Marketing Director until he died in 2008. Gaeloideachas
Gaeloideachas is a national Irish organisation supporting the development of Irish-medium immersion schools at preschool (outside the Gaeltacht) and primary and secondary levels in the Republic of Ireland. They were established as ''Gaelscoileanna Teo.'' in 1973 and kept that name and remit of supporting Gaelscoileanna until 2014 when they were appointed by ''Foras na Gaeilge'' to be one of the six lead Foras na Gaeilge-funded Irish language organisations- with a responsibility for the support of Irish-language medium education at preschool (outside the Gaeltacht) and primary and second-levels in the Republic of Ireland. Gael Linn
Gael Linn (, "Gael-with-us") is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation focused on the promotion of the Irish language and the arts. The organisation's funding includes government and lottery sources. History Gael Linn was founded in May 1953, following a meeting in Cork, with the goal to foster interest in the Irish language and promote artistic events. Since the early years of its foundation, the organisation has also run language courses. In the mid-1950s, Gael Linn supported the production of short films and news reels which were distributed to cinemas. In 1955, Gael Linn established the Irish-language Damer Theatre on St Stephen's Green which it operated until 1976.
