Irish Ladies Hockey Union
Hockey Ireland, previously known as the Irish Hockey Association, is the governing body for field hockey in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It is responsible for organising both the Ireland men's national field hockey team and the Ireland women's national field hockey team, as well as national leagues and cup competitions. Hockey Ireland is mainly funded through grants as well as small contributions from Sport Ireland, Sport Northern Ireland and the Olympic Council of Ireland. In 2013 Hockey Ireland became a limited company. Approximately 168 clubs and 280 schools are affiliated to Hockey Ireland. Ulster Hockey Union
The Ulster Hockey Union is the governing body for field hockey in Ulster. It is affiliated to Hockey Ireland. It organises a number of leagues and cup competitions for clubs and schools in the province. These include the Ulster Senior League, the Kirk Cup and the Ulster Shield. Over 70 clubs are affiliated to the union. Foundation The modern Ulster Hockey Union was founded in May 2009 following the merger of the Ulster Branch of the Irish Hockey Association and the Ulster Women's Hockey Union. The UBIHA was originally formed in December 1896. Founding members of the original association included the North Down, Cliftonville and Antrim hockey clubs. At a special general meeting on 15 October 1897 at the Royal Avenue Hotel, Belfast, members of the association agreed to form the Ulster Senior League. The Women's Irish Junior Cup is a knockout trophy played for by women's field hockey clubs in Ireland, under the auspices of the Irish Hockey Association. Entry is open to sides that do not qualify for the Women's Irish Senior Cup and to the second teams of clubs that play in the Irish Senior Cup. The trophy was first played for in 1909. The final was then moved to a separate weekend. The change was prompted by the circumstances of the 1934 finals. The England women's national field hockey team are the current Commonwealth Games champions having previously won silver 3 times. England have also won the 2006 Women's Field Hockey World Cup Qualifier and the 2002 Champions Challenge. History Marjorie Pollard played hockey nearly every year for England from 1921 to 1937. The team toured New Zealand in 1938 and the US in 1947. Notable players were Barbara and Bridget West, Hilda Light and Mary Russell Vick. Alexandra College
Alexandra College ( ir, Coláiste Alexandra) is a fee-charging boarding and day school for girls located in Milltown, Dublin, Ireland. The school operates under a Church of Ireland ethos. History The school was founded in 1866 and takes its name from Princess Alexandra of Denmark, the school's patron. The school colours, red and white, were adopted from the Danish flag in her honour. Alexandra College was founded by Ann Jellicoe, a Quaker educationist, in the name of furthering women's education.
