Iris Ser. Tripetalae
''Iris'' ser. ''Tripetalae'' is a series of the genus '' Iris'', in ''Iris'' subg. ''Limniris''. The series was first classified by Ludwig Diels in 'Die Natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien' (Edited by H. G. A. Engler and K. Prantl) in 1930. It was further expanded by George Hill Mathewson Lawrence in ''Gentes Herb'' (written in Dutch) in 1953.James Cullen, Sabina G. Knees, H. Suzanne Cubey (Editors) The name of the series comes from the three petals of the flowers of the species in the series. It has been theorised that the formation of the ice caps during the last ice age, led to the split of ''Iris tridentata'' from other forms in North America.British Iris Society (1997) Most have small standards and violet-blue flowers, with darker veins on the large falls. Only, ''Iris setosa'' is in cultivation, in the UK, and in the US. They prefer lime-free soils and moist conditions. They are often used in hybridising with species of ''Iris'' ser. ''Sibiricae'' or ''Iris'' ser. ''Cal ...

Ludwig Diels
Dr. Friedrich Ludwig Emil Diels (24 September 1874 – 30 November 1945) was a German botanist. Diels was born in Hamburg, the son of the classical scholar Hermann Alexander Diels. From 1900 to 1902 he traveled together with Ernst Georg Pritzel through South Africa, Java, Australia and New Zealand. Shortly before the First World War he travelled New Guinea and in the 1930s in Ecuador. Especially his collections of plants from Australia and Ecuador, which contained numerous holotypes, enriched the knowledge of the concerning floras. His monography on the Droseraceae from 1906 is still a standard. The majority of his collections were stored at the botanical garden in Berlin-Dahlem, whose vicedirector he had been since 1913, becoming its director in 1921 until 1945. His collections were destroyed there during an air raid in 1943. He died in Berlin on 30 November 1945. Honours Several genus of plants have been named after him including; ''Dielsantha'' (from ''Campanulaceae' ...

Iris (plant)
''Iris'' is a flowering plant genus of 310 accepted species with showy flowers. As well as being the scientific name, ''iris'' is also widely used as a common name for all ''Iris'' species, as well as some belonging to other closely related genera. A common name for some species is 'flags', while the plants of the subgenus '' Scorpiris'' are widely known as 'junos', particularly in horticulture. It is a popular garden flower. The often-segregated, monotypic genera '' Belamcanda'' (blackberry lily, ''I. domestica''), '' Hermodactylus'' (snake's head iris, ''I. tuberosa''), and ''Pardanthopsis'' (vesper iris, '' I. dichotoma'') are currently included in ''Iris''. Three Iris varieties are used in the Iris flower data set outlined by Ronald Fisher in his 1936 paper ''The use of multiple measurements in taxonomic problems'' as an example of linear discriminant analysis. Description Irises are perennial plants, growing from creeping rhizomes (rhizomatous irises) or, in drier cl ...
