Ireland At The 2016 Summer Olympics
Ireland competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's twenty-first appearance at the Summer Olympics, having attended every edition, either in its own right or as part of a Great Britain and Ireland team before 1924, with the exception of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany. The Olympic Council of Ireland fielded a team of 77 athletes, 51 men and 26 women, across 14 sports at the Games. It was the nation's largest delegation sent to the Olympics since 1996, due to the historic comeback of the men's field hockey squad after a century-long absence. Apart from field hockey, Ireland also made its Olympic return to diving after nearly seven decades, as well as its debut in golf (new to the 2016 Games) and women's track cycling. Rowing At The 2016 Summer Olympics
The rowing competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 13 August 2016 at the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon in Lagoa. Fourteen medal events were being contested by 547 athletes, 334 men and 213 women. For the third Olympics in a row, Great Britain was the most successful nation, topping the medal table with three golds and two silvers. Pat Hickey (sports Administrator)
Patrick Joseph "Pat" Hickey (born 17 June 1945) is an Irish sports administrator. He was president of the Olympic Council of Ireland from 1988 until 2016, and also served on Olympic and judo bodies at European and global level. Early and personal life Hickey worked as an estate agent, qualifying at the Institute of Property Valuers. He is married, and as of 2015, his firm, Hickey Auctioneers, was run by his daughter and eldest son. A 2nd dan black belt in judo, he represented Ireland internationally, and competed into his forties. He maintains his fitness, and in 2015 he was jogging several times weekly in Phoenix Park.
