Thomas Chamney
Thomas Chamney (born 16 April 1984) is an Irish runner who was born in Clonmel and brought up in Dublin. He specialises in the 800 metres event. He was educated at Kilkenny College and at Saint Columba's College, Dublin. Chamney runs for the Crusaders AC club whilst in Dublin and has been on an athletics scholarship at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana where he studied English from 2002–2007. He is a four-time Irish Senior 800m champion and competed at the Beijing Olympics in that event in 2008. On the field accolades In 2006, Chamney earned All-America honours at the NCAA Indoor Championships, picking up his first career citation with a sixth-place finish in the 800-metre run at the Randall Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Women's 400 metres at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place on 16–19 August at the Beijing National Stadium. The qualifying standards were 51.55 s (A standard) and 52.35 s (B standard). Favourites for the event included Sanya Richards-Ross and the reigning world champion, Christine Ohuruogu. In the final, Richards-Ross made a rapid start and quickly took the lead, while Ohuruogu ran a more even-paced race, but was well down the field entering the final straight. However, in the last 100 metres Richard-Ross, clearly tired from her earlier effort, began to tie up badly, while Ohuruogu began to surge through the field. At the line, Great Britain's Christine Ohuruogu won in 49.62 seconds to add the Olympic title to her World title, just pipping Shericka Williams by 0.07 seconds to take gold. Joanne Cuddihy
Joanne Cuddihy (born 11 May 1984) is an Irish sprint athlete, competing for the Kilkenny City Harriers. She was the Irish 400 metres outdoor women's record holder with a time of 50.73 seconds. Career Junior competition At the 2001 IAAF/Westel World Youth Championships, Cuddihy qualified for the final of the 400 metres by finishing second in her heat with a time of 54.16, a season's best. On 14 July, Cuddihy finished fifth in the final at the World Youth Championships. The following year at the IAAF/Coca-Cola World Junior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica, Cuddihy finished sixth in the final. On 12 June 2003, at a European GP meeting in Riga, Latvia, Cuddihy broke the junior Irish national record in the 400 metres with a time of 53.21 seconds. Colin Griffin (born 3 August 1982) is an Irish race walker who has competed in the Olympics. Career Griffin is a race walker who competed at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games in the 50k walk. James "Jamie" Costin ( ga, Séamus Ó Coistín; born 1 June 1977) is an Irish race walker from the Gaeltacht area of Old Parish, County Waterford. He has qualified to represent Ireland in the 50km Walk at three Olympic Games. Robert Heffernan
Robert Heffernan (born 28 February 1978) is an Irish race walker. Career At the 2000 Olympics he finished in 28th place, and at the 2004 Olympics he was disqualified, both in the 20 km race walking discipline. At the 2008 Olympic Games he improved, coming eighth in the 20km Walk. His wife Marian Andrews is also national women's 400 metres champion and was on the Irish women's team that finished 4th in the European indoors. On 27 July 2010, Heffernan won the bronze medal in the 2010 European Athletics Championships in the 20 kilometres walk, posting a time of 1:21:00 (achieved retrospectively in 2014 after Russian Stanislav Emelyanov was found to have committed an anti-doping violation). The men's marathon at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place on 24 August at 7:30am in Beijing, ending in the Beijing National Stadium. It was (as of today) the last time in Summer Olympics history that the start and/or finish of the men's marathon route was located inside the Olympic Stadium. Ninety-five athletes from 56 nations competed. The winner of the event was Samuel Wanjiru of Kenya, who set an Olympic record in the time of two hours, six minutes, and 32 seconds.
