Iraqi Premier League
The Iraqi Premier League ( ar, الدوري العراقي الممتاز) is the top level of the Iraqi football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it is operated by the Iraq Football Association (IFA) and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Iraq Division One. The league was formed by the IFA in 1974 as the Iraqi National Clubs First Division, the first nationwide league of clubs in Iraq. The current format sees 20 teams playing 38 matches each (playing each team in the league twice, home and away), totalling 380 matches in the season. Of the 80 teams to have competed since the inception of the league in 1974, eleven have won the title. Al-Zawraa SC, Al-Zawraa are the most successful club with 14 titles, followed by Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Talaba SC, Al-Talaba and Al-Shorta SC, Al-Shorta, who together contest the Baghdad derbies. Iraq Football Association
The Iraq Football Association (IFA) ( ar, الاتحاد العراقي لكرة القدم) is the governing body of football in Iraq, controlling the Iraqi national team and the Iraqi Premier League. The Iraqi Football Association was founded in 1948 and has been a member of FIFA since 1950, the Asian Football Confederation since 1970, and the Sub-confederation regional body West Asian Football Federation since 2001. Iraq is also part of the Union of Arab Football Associations and has been a member since 1974. The Iraqi team is commonly known as ''Usood Al-Rafidain'' ( ar, أسود الرافدين), which literally means ''Lions of Mesopotamia''. Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya
Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya ( ar, نادي القوة الجوية الرياضي, lit=Air Force Club) is an Iraqi sports club based in Rusafa District, Baghdad that competes in the Iraqi Premier League, the top-flight of Iraqi football. Founded in 1931, it is the oldest existing club in Iraq. Its football team is one of the most successful in Iraq having won seven Iraqi Premier League titles, most recently in the 2020–21 season, which it won alongside its fifth Iraq FA Cup title. The club also won a joint-record three Iraqi Elite Cups, and in 1996–97 it became the first of only two clubs to win all four major national trophies ( League, FA Cup, Elite Cup, Super Cup) in the same season. Al-Naqil FC
Al-Naqil Sports Club ( ar, نادي النقل الرياضي, meaning ''Transport Sports Club''), was an Iraqi sports club based in Baghdad that was founded in 1937 under the name Al-Sikak Al-Hadeed ( ar, السكك الحديد, meaning ''Railways''). They were renamed Al-Naqil in 1974, competing in the first season of the Iraqi Premier League (the top tier of Iraqi club football) and finishing as runners-up. The club was dissolved in 1975 as they had no administration or financial backing. Their football players left to join newly-promoted club Al-Zawraa, who went on to become one of Iraqi football's most successful clubs. Al-Naqil won one trophy in their existence, which was the Independent Baghdad Tournament in 1973, a tournament held to allow teams to continue playing matches after the premature end to the 1972–73 Iraq Central FA First Division. Al-Muwasalat SC
Al-Muwasalat Sports Club ( ar, نادي المواصلات الرياضي) was a sports club based in Baghdad, Iraq. History In Premier League On 18 August 1974, the Iraq Football Association decided to form the Iraqi National Clubs Division as the first nationwide league of clubs in the country. It was decided that two top-flight teams, Al-Minaa and Al-Bareed, would be merged to form Al-Muwasalat to compete in the inaugural season of the new league.
