Iranaitivu
Iranaitivu ( ta, இரணைதீவு, translit=Iraṇaitīvu; si, රනදූව/එරන්දූව, translit=Ranadūva/Erandūva) is an island of Sri Lanka, located in the Gulf of Mannar and part of Kilinochchi District within the Northern Province. The site of a Sri Lanka Armed Forces base since 1992, the island is being repopulated by former inhabitants, who began returning in 2018. Geography Iranaitivu is a double island, with two parts joined by a neck of land; the name means "the twin islands", although it is possible it was distorted from ''Irantive'', derived from the Sinhala for "golden" and referring to the island's appearance in the sunset from the coast to the east. Lionair Flight 602
Lionair Flight 602 was a Lionair Antonov An-24RV which crashed into the sea off the north-western coast of Sri Lanka on 29 September 1998. The aircraft departed Jaffna Airport with 48 passengers and a crew of seven; it disappeared from radar screens ten minutes into the flight. Initial reports indicated that the plane had been shot down by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam using a MANPADS, which has since been confirmed. All aboard were presumed killed. Aircraft and crew The Antonov AN-24RV was leased from Belarusian company Gomelavia to operate flight 602. It was captained by Anatoli Matochko and had six other crew including a Sinhalese stewardess.
