''Ira, George and Joe'' is an album by jazz guitarist Joe Pass that was released in 1982. It was re-issued in 1994 on CD by Original Jazz Classics. It is a tribute album to the songs of George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin. The photo on the front cover was created by Phil Stern. There is also another version of this cover from 1982 that contains the text "Joe Pass Loves Gershwin" instead of just "Joe Pass". Reception Writing for Allmusic, music critic Scott Yanow wrote of the album "The melodies are quite familiar ("Bidin' My Time" is the closest one to an obscurity), and few surprises occur, but the music swings and the results are quite enjoyable." Joe Pass
Joe Pass (born Joseph Anthony Jacobi Passalaqua; January 13, 1929 – May 23, 1994) was an American jazz guitarist. Pass is well known for his work stemming from numerous collaborations with pianist Oscar Peterson and vocalist Ella Fitzgerald, and is often heralded as one of the most unique and notable jazz guitarists of the 20th century. Early life Pass was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, New Brunswick, New Jersey, on January 13, 1929. His father, Mariano Passalaqua, was a steel mill worker who was born in Sicily. The family later moved to Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Pass became interested in the guitar after he saw Gene Autry on television. He got his first guitar when he was nine. Shelly Manne
Sheldon "Shelly" Manne (June 11, 1920 – September 26, 1984) was an American jazz drummer. Most frequently associated with West Coast jazz, he was known for his versatility and also played in a number of other styles, including Dixieland, swing, bebop, avant-garde jazz, and later fusion. He also contributed to the musical background of hundreds of Hollywood films and television programs. Family and origins Manne's father Max Manne and uncles were drummers. In his youth he admired many of the leading swing drummers of the day, especially Jo Jones and Dave Tough. Billy Gladstone, a colleague of Manne's father and the most admired percussionist on the New York theatrical scene, offered the teenage Shelly tips and encouragement. Jim Hughart
James David Hughart (born July 28, 1936) is a jazz and pop bass player. Biography Hughart was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, and is the son of Frederick (Fritz) Hughart, bassist with Minneapolis Symphony and San Diego Symphony, and Annette Hughart (née Bastien). Hughart began working as a musician in 1953. In 1957 he received a BA (Music Composition & Theory, Bass) from the University of Minnesota. Following graduation, Hughart was drafted and for two years, traveled throughout Europe performing with the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra. After his discharge from the Army, he joined Ella Fitzgerald's touring band following a recommendation from Ray Brown. During his three years with Ella Fitzgerald, Hughart started his extensive recording career. In 1964 he moved to Los Angeles and became a very active session musician.
