Ippolit Giliarovsky
Ippolit Giliarovsky (18 August 1865 – 27 June 1905) was the second in command as a frigate captain of the Russian battleship Potemkin, battleship ''Potemkin'' during the mutiny. He held key responsibility for the uprising due to his brutal treatment of the sailors. Giliarovsky was killed during the mutiny. Early career Born in Tallinn, Reval (in the Russian Governorate of Estonia), Ippolit Giliarovsky, the son of a Russian Orthodox priest, joined the Imperial Navy as a cadet in 1883. He was promoted from midshipman to artillery lieutenant in 1889. After serving as a naval artillery staff officer with the Baltic Fleet Command Giliarovsky was appointed as a senior officer on the cruiser Russian cruiser Gromoboi, ''Gromoboy''. Grigory Vakulinchuk
Grigory Mykytovych Vakulenchuk (russian: Григо́рий Ники́тич Вакуленчу́к, 1877– 14/27 June 1905) was a Ukrainian sailor in the Imperial Russian Navy. He was born in Velyki Korovyntsi (now in Zhytomyr Oblast). He served on the Russian battleship ''Potemkin''. He was one of nine children. He and his family worked in a sugar factory until the navy conscripted him. He learned to read in radical study circles. He became a member of a sailor patrol in Sevastopol so he could monitor radical meetings while pretending to bring them to light. Once he actually turned away two officers after saying he'd arrested a meeting of radicals the two men had found. Potemkin Mutiny
The Russian battleship ''Potemkin'' (russian: Князь Потёмкин Таврический, translit=''Kniaz Potyomkin Tavricheskiy'', links=no, "Prince Potemkin of Taurida") was a pre-dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet. She became famous when the crew rebelled against the officers in June 1905 (during that year's revolution), which is now viewed as a first step towards the Russian Revolution of 1917. The mutiny later formed the basis of Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 silent film '' Battleship Potemkin''. After the mutineers sought asylum in Constanța, Romania, and after the Russians recovered the ship, her name was changed to ''Panteleimon''. Afanasy Nikolayevich Matushenko (russian: Афана́сий Никола́евич Матюшенко, uk, Пана́с Микола́йович Матюшенко, 2 May 1879 - ), was a non-commissioned officer in the Russian Black Sea Fleet, revolutionary socialist, and ringleader of the mutiny on the Russian battleship ''Potemkin''. He was born into a peasant family in the village of Derhachi (by some accounts - cobbler family), eight miles northwest of Kharkiv. He lived in a tiny hut (15 feet square) with his parents and five siblings. His father Nikolai was an ex-serf, earning money on the side as a cobbler. After the famine of 1891, Nikolai became an alcoholic. Afanasy, who had learned to read at 9, had to take up cobbling when he was 12. Matushenko managed to finish a church parish school. Borscht () is a sour soup common in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia.
