Iowa Senate Elections, 2008
The 2008 Iowa Senate election were held on November 4, 2008. The Senate seats for the twenty-five even-numbered districts were up for election. Senate terms are staggered such that half the membership is elected every two years, with each Senators serving a four-year term. Prior to the election, the Democrats were in the majority - marking the first time in 42 years that the Democrats had controlled both branches of the Iowa General Assembly and the Governor's Office. Iowa State Senate
The Iowa Senate is the upper house of the Iowa General Assembly, United States. There are 50 seats in the Iowa Senate, representing 50 single-member districts across the state of Iowa with populations of approximately 60,927 per constituency, . Each Senate district is composed of two House districts. The Senate meets at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines. Unlike the lower house, the Iowa House of Representatives, Senators serve four-year terms, with no term limits. Terms are staggered so that half the Senate is up for reelection every two years. Leadership The President of the Senate presides over the body, whose powers include referring bills to committee, recognizing members during debate, and making procedural rulings. Unlike the more powerful Speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives, the Senate President cannot appoint committee chairmanships or shuffle committee memberships. Jeff Danielson
Jeff Danielson (born August 6, 1970) is a former Democratic Iowa State Senator. Having served the 30th Senate District between 2013 and 2019, he had also previously served the 10th Senate District up until redistricting, between 2005 and 2013. Danielson served on following committees: Appropriations (Vice Chair), Economic Growth, State Government (Chair), Transportation, Veterans Affairs (Vice Chair), and the Administration and Regulation Appropriations Subcommittee (Vice Chair). Steve Kettering
Steve Kettering (born 1943) is the Iowa State Senator from the 26th District. A Republican, he has served in the Iowa Senate since 2003, when he won a special election to fill the vacancy left after Steve King was elected to Iowa's 5th congressional district He got his Bachelor of Arts, B.A. from Buena Vista College and his master's degree from California State University, Long Beach. Albert Sorensen
Albert "Al" Sorensen (born February 19, 1932) served as a Democratic Iowa State Senator from 1991 to 1997. He joined the Senate after winning a special election in 1991, his predecessor, Jack Nystrom (R- Boone), having resigned to serve on the Iowa Liquor Commission. He won re-election in 1992, but lost in 1996 to Republican Jerry Behn. Jerry Behn (born January 31, 1954) is an American politician who served as a member of the Iowa Senate for the 24th district from 1997 to 2021. Career Behn served as a Boone County supervisor from 1995 to 1996. Steven J. "Steve" Sodders was a Democratic politician, who was a Mayor of State Center, Iowa. He also served as Deputy Sheriff in Marshall County until he was forced into early retirement for falsifying records. Larry E. McKibben (born January 5, 1947, in Marshalltown, Iowa) was the Iowa State Senator from the 22nd District. He had served in the Iowa Senate since 1997 and was an assistant minority leader until he retired in 2008. He received his B.A. (1970) from the University of Northern Iowa and his J.D.
