The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services is a state agency of Iowa. History The Iowa Board of Social Welfare was founded in 1937 by the Iowa General Assembly. In 1967, it was merged with the Iowa Board of Control and Iowa Board of Parole to form the Iowa Department of Social Services. It was renamed the Iowa Department of Human Services in 1987. In 2022, as part of Governor Reynold's State Agency Alignment initiative, the Iowa Department of Human Services and the Iowa Department of Public Health merged to form the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. The Iowa General Assembly is the legislative branch of the state government of Iowa. Like the federal United States Congress, the General Assembly is a bicameral body, composed of the upper house Iowa Senate and the lower Iowa House of Representatives respectively. The Senate consists of four year terms and the House consists of two year terms. The General Assembly convenes within the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines.
