Greenfield, Iowa
Greenfield is a city and county seat of Adair County, Iowa, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 2,062. History The area around Greenfield was settled in 1854. The plan for the town of Greenfield was created in 1856 when the land was purchased by Milton C. Munger. Munger is responsible for the design of Greenfield's unique Lancaster-style town square, and the city park located at Grant and NE Second Street was also included in the original plat. Greenfield is named after Greenfield, Massachusetts. Greenfield became the county seat in 1875, after battling out nearby Fontanelle for the title. The city was incorporated on May 22, 1876. Don Ultang
Donald Theodore Ultang (March 23, 1917 – September 18, 2008) was an American photographer, a pioneer in aerial photography and a Pulitzer Prize winner. Ultang was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa and raised in Cedar Rapids. He attended the University of Iowa, earning a degree in economics in 1939. Shortly after his graduation from college, he was hired by ''The Des Moines Register''. Ronnie Walter Cunningham (born March 16, 1932) is a retired American astronaut. In 1968, he was a lunar module pilot on the Apollo 7 mission. He was NASA's third civilian astronaut (after Neil Armstrong and Elliot See), and has also been a fighter pilot, physicist, entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and author of the 1977 book ''The All-American Boys''. Louis Schalk
Louis Wellington 'Lou' Schalk, Jr (29 May 1926 – 16 August 2002) was an American aviator. As chief test pilot for the Lockheed Corporation's Skunk Works, he was first to fly the Lockheed A-12. A native of Alden, Iowa, Schalk started at West Point in 1944, graduated in 1948, then trained and received his pilot's wings at Nellis Air Force Base. He served with the 86th Fighter-Bomber Wing in Germany. Schalk completed flight instructor school at Craig AFB and taught at Laredo Air Force Base in Texas. Eugene Burton Ely (October 21, 1886 – October 19, 1911) was an American aviation pioneer, credited with the first shipboard aircraft take off and landing. Background Ely was born in Williamsburg, Iowa, and raised in Davenport, Iowa. Having completed the eighth grade, he graduated from Davenport Grammar School 4 in January 1901. Although some sources indicate that he attended and graduated from the Iowa State University in 1904 (when he would have been 17), the registrar of ISU reports that there is no record of his having done so – nor did he attend the University of Iowa or the University of Northern Iowa. Clayton Folkerts
Clayton Folkerts (1897–1964) was an American aircraft designer. Early life Self-taught in aircraft design, Clayton built five aircraft at his family farm between 1916 and 1926, including a Henderson powered high-wing. Folkerts worked for Central States Aero in Davenport, Iowa designing and building the prototype Monocoupe Model 22 in four months for Donald Arthur Luscombe. The Monocoupe would go on to become a popular racing aircraft of the 1920s and 1930s. By the end of 1928, 90% of all light planes and 10% of all licensed airplanes owned in the U.S. were Monocoupes, which remained in production until 1950. Folkerts designed a series of winning air racers, the Folkerts SK-1, Folkerts SK-2, and Folkerts SK-3 that won at the National Air Races.
