Inverclyde Council
Inverclyde Council is one of the 32 local authorities of Scotland. Created in 1995, its administrative centre is based in Greenock and its territory covers the area of Inverclyde in the west of Scotland, taking over from the local government district of the same name and area which existed under the larger Strathclyde region, which was established in 1975. Prior to that, the territory was part of the historic county of Renfrewshire. History The council gained national notoriety in 2005 following harsh criticism from the Accounts Commission regarding poor leadership and accountability. In November 2005 the council was given a 6-month deadline to reorganise and improve further, following the resignation of the council chief in September and organisational changes in the wake of the original report. Inverclyde East (ward)
Inverclyde East is one of the seven wards used to elect members of the Inverclyde Council. It elects three Councillors. The ward includes the large village of Kilmacolm, the smaller settlement of Quarrier's Village, an elevated rural hinterland to the west (part of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park) and eastern parts of Port Glasgow (the Bardrainney, Broadfield, Park Farm and Woodhall neighbourhoods). In 2019, the ward had a population of 11,340. Greenock Municipal Buildings
Greenock Municipal Buildings is a municipal structure in Clyde Square, Greenock, Scotland. The municipal buildings, which are the headquarters of Inverclyde Council, are Category A listed. History The first municipal building on the site was an 18th-century town house which was built on land acquired from Lord Cathcart. The works were carried out by a local builder, James Wallace, for £240 and the building was completed in 1765.Smith 1927, p. 15 Lord Cathcart insisted that the local masonic lodge should be allowed to hold meetings in the building. The building was enlarged and remodelled in the neoclassical style at a cost of £1,700 in 1858. Now referred to as the "town hall", it faced northeast onto Dalrymple Street. A unitary authority is a local authority responsible for all local government functions within its area or performing additional functions that elsewhere are usually performed by a higher level of sub-national government or the national government. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. 2007 Scottish Parliament Election
The 2007 Scottish Parliament election was held on Thursday 3 May 2007 to elect members to the Scottish Parliament. It was the third general election to the devolved Scottish Parliament since it was created in 1999. Local elections in Scotland fell on the same day. The Scottish National Party emerged as the largest party with 47 seats, closely followed by the incumbent Scottish Labour Party with 46 seats. The Scottish Conservatives won 17 seats, the Scottish Liberal Democrats 16 seats, the Scottish Greens 2 seats and one Independent (Margo MacDonald) was also elected. The SNP initially approached the Liberal Democrats for a coalition government, but the Lib Dems turned them down. 2007 Inverclyde Council Election
Elections to Inverclyde Council were held on 3 May 2007 the same day as the Scottish Parliament general election. The election was the first one using six new wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004; each ward will elect three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system, a form of proportional representation. The new wards replace 20 single-member wards which used the plurality (first past the post) system of election.
