Linx (band)
Linx were a British soul/Brit funk band (music), band consisting of David Grant (singer), David Grant (lead vocals), Bob Carter (keyboard instrument, keyboards), Andy Duncan (drums), Canute Edwards (guitar), Peter Martin (bass guitar, bass) (aka Sketch) and Junior Giscombe (backing vocals). Carter and Duncan were session musicians who were known for their contribution to Hazel O'Connor's ''Breaking Glass (album), Breaking Glass'' album and movie. After their first hit in 1980, the band slimmed down to a duo of Grant and Martin. Peter Martin (the bassist) joined the band 23 Skidoo (band), 23 Skidoo. ''Intuition'' is the debut album by Britfunk band Linx, released in March 1981 on Chrysalis Records. Produced by David Grant, Peter Martin and Bob Carter of the group, the record followed the popular success of their UK hit single "You're Lying", which features on the album, and incorporates styles beyond funk music, such as rock, jazz and soul. Linx preferred to think of their style as simply pop music. The album's appearance in 1981 saw Linx ride the popularity of Britfunk in the United Kingdom, where they were among the scene's most successful acts alongside Level 42 and Freeez. It reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart and number 175 on the US ''Billboard'' Top LPs & Tapes chart. The title track "Intuition" was a Top 10 hit in Britain, while "Throw Away the Key" made the Top 30. Jazz-funk
Jazz-funk is a subgenre of jazz music characterized by a strong back beat (groove), electrified sounds, and an early prevalence of analog synthesizers. The integration of funk, soul, and R&B music and styles into jazz resulted in the creation of a genre whose spectrum is quite wide and ranges from strong jazz improvisation to soul, funk or disco with jazz arrangements, jazz riffs, jazz solos, and sometimes soul vocals. Chrysalis Records () is a British record label that was founded in 1968. The name is both a reference to the pupal stage of a butterfly and a combination of its founders' names, Chris Wright and Terry Ellis. It started as the Ellis-Wright Agency. David Grant (singer)
David Grant (born 8 August 1956) is a British singer, comedian and vocal coach. Career Grant became famous in the early 1980s as a member of UK soul/funk duo, Linx, whose biggest hit was "Intuition" in 1981. He began a solo career in 1983 with the top 40 hit "Stop and Go". Further hits included "Watching You Watching Me" and two duets with Jaki Graham, "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" which reached number five in 1985 and the Todd Rundgren-penned "Mated", which made number 20 later that year. He has also worked as a session singer for artists including Diana Ross, Rick Astley and Lighthouse Family. Grant has become well known, along with his second wife Carrie Grant, as vocal coach on ''Pop Idol''; judge and vocal coach on the BBC TV talent show ''Fame Academy''; and its spin-off '' Comic Relief Does Fame Academy''. Brit Funk
Brit funk (or Britfunk) is a musical style that has its origins in the British music scene of the late 1970s and which remained popular into the 1980s. It mixes elements from jazz, funk, soul, urban dance rhythms and pop hooks. The scene originated in southern England and spread with support from DJs including DJ Froggy, Greg Edwards, Robbie Vincent, Chris Hill and Colin Curtis. Major funk acts included Jimmy James and the Vagabonds, Average White Band, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Carl Douglas, Hot Chocolate, the Delegation, Hi-Tension, Light of the World, Level 42, Central Line, the Pasadenas, Beggar and Co and Soul II Soul. Record Mirror
''Record Mirror'' was a British weekly music newspaper between 1954 and 1991 for pop fans and record collectors. Launched two years after the ''NME'', it never attained the circulation of its rival. The first UK album chart was published in ''Record Mirror'' in 1956, and during the 1980s it was the only consumer music paper to carry the official UK singles and UK albums charts used by the BBC for Radio 1 and ''Top of the Pops'', as well as the US ''Billboard'' charts. Kent Music Report
The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music enthusiast David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. From June 1988, the Australian Recording Industry Association, which had been using the top 50 portion of the report under licence since mid-1983, chose to produce their own listing as the ARIA Charts. Before the Kent Report, ''Go-Set'' magazine published weekly Top-40 Singles from 1966, and Album charts from 1970 until the magazine's demise in August 1974.
