Interstate 220 (I-220) in Louisiana is an east–west bypass route around Shreveport, in the northwestern corner of the state. It runs from I-20 and Louisiana Highway 3132 (LA 3132) in Shreveport to a second interchange with I-20 in Bossier City. The highway serve as a northern bypass of the downtown area for through traffic traveling on I-20, and, with LA 3132, the highway helps to carry through traffic between the two currently disconnected portions of I-49, the area's main north–south route. The Interstate Highway System in Louisiana consists of of freeways constructed and maintained by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (La DOTD). The system was authorized on June 29, 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956. The Louisiana Department of Highways, predecessor of the DOTD, began construction shortly afterward on its portion of the system, to which approximately was initially allotted. The first road segment in the new system was officially opened and dedicated on February 24, 1960 and consisted of a portion of the Pontchartrain Expressway ( I-10) in New Orleans. It is contiguous to Bossier City, Louisiana, along the base's western and northwestern edge. Barksdale AFB occupies more than east of Bossier City and along the southern edge of Interstate 20. Cross Lake () is a man-made lake located near Shreveport, Louisiana. The reservoir provides the water supply for the City of Shreveport. Moss covered cypress trees line the banks of this open lake popular for fishing and recreational boating. It supports waterfowl, alligators and an abundance of other wildlife.
