An Internet meme, or simply meme (, ), is a cultural item (such as an idea, behaviour, or style) that is spread via the Internet, often through social media platforms, such as YouTube, X (social media platform), Twitter, Reddit, etc. Internet memes can take various forms, such as images, videos, GIFs, and various other Viral phenomenon, viral sensations. Characteristics of memes include their susceptibility to parody, their use of intertextuality, their propagation in a Viral phenomenon#Meme, viral pattern, and their evolution over time. The name is from the concept of memes proposed by Richard Dawkins in 1972. Mike Godwin coined the term ''Internet meme'' in 1993 when he discussed memes as spreading via Internet forum, messageboards, Usenet groups, and email. "Charlie bit my finger - again !", more simply known as "Charlie Bit My Finger" or "Charlie Bit Me", was a 2007 internet viral video famous for being at the time the most viewed YouTube video. As of October 2022, the video received over 897 million views. In May 2021, the video was sold as an NFT at auction for over $700,000. On 24 May, the video was set to Unlisted. A remix (or reorchestration) is a piece of media which has been altered or contorted from its original state by adding, removing, or changing pieces of the item. A song, piece of artwork, book, video, poem, or photograph can all be remixes. The only characteristic of a remix is that it appropriates and changes other materials to create something new. Mimicry
In evolutionary biology, mimicry is an evolved resemblance between an organism and another object, often an organism of another species.
