Internet Provider Security
Internet Provider Security (IPS) tags are used by domain registrar to administer a domain name registration service and related Domain Name System (DNS) services. An IPS tag is the label that applies to each registrar that registers domains in the country-code top-level domain ''uk'' and is required to transfer domain names from one registrar to another. The original meaning of ''IPS tag'' was thought to be lost after it was created with Nominet UK's predecessor, the Naming Committee; it is widely speculated that it stands for ''Internet Provider Security tag''. The term ''IPS tag'' itself is considered obsolete by Nominet UK, and is now referred to simply as ''tag''. However, there are also records of those involved in the early internet industry who believe it was a typo of the initialism for Internet Service Provider made by an unnamed junior systems administrator, ISPs being the main bodies responsible for registering domains in the early years of the commercial internet. A domain name registrar is a company that manages the reservation of Internet domain names. A domain name registrar must be accredited by a generic top-level domain (gTLD) registry or a country code top-level domain (ccTLD) registry. A registrar operates in accordance with the guidelines of the designated domain name registries. History Until 1999, Network Solutions Inc. (NSI) operated the registries for the ''com'', ''net'', and ''org'' top-level domains (TLDs). In addition to the function of domain name registry operator, it was also the sole registrar for these domains. However, several companies had developed independent registrar services. A domain name is a string that identifies a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet. Domain Registration
Domain registration is the process of acquiring a domain name from a domain name registrar. History In 1993 the U.S. Department of Commerce, in conjunction with several public and private entities, created InterNIC to maintain a central database that contains all the registered domain names and the associated IP addresses in the U.S. (other countries maintain their own NICs (Network Information Centers) -- there is a link below that discusses Canada's system, for example). Network Solutions, a member of InterNIC, was chosen to administer and maintain the growing number of Internet domain names and IP addresses. This central database is copied to Top Level Domain (TLD) servers around the world and creates the primary routing tables used by every computer that connects to the Internet. The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical and distributed naming system for computers, services, and other resources in the Internet or other Internet Protocol (IP) networks. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the associated entities. Most prominently, it translates readily memorized domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed for locating and identifying computer services and devices with the underlying network protocols. Nominet UK
Nominet UK is currently delegated by IANA to be the manager of the .uk domain name. Nominet directly manages registrations directly under .uk, and some of the second level domains .co.uk, .org.uk, .sch.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, .ltd.uk and .plc.uk. Nominet also manages the .wales and .cymru domains. As of February 2021, the .uk register held 10,922,477 .uk domain names. This represents a year on year downward trend, when compared to February 2020, this is mainly due to lapsing of the recently launched .uk domain names. Nominet was founded by Dr. Willie Black and five others on 14 May 1996 when its predecessor, the "Naming Committee" was unable to deal with the volume of registrations then being sought under the .uk domain.
