Women's Tennis Association
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is the principal organizing body of women's professional tennis. It governs the WTA Tour which is the worldwide professional tennis tour for women and was founded to create a better future for women's tennis. The WTA's corporate headquarters is in St. Petersburg, Florida, with its European headquarters in London and its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Beijing. The Women's Tennis Association was founded in June 1973 by Billie Jean King, and traces its origins to the inaugural Virginia Slims tournament, arranged by Gladys Heldman, sponsored by Joe Cullman, CEO of Philip Morris, and held on 23 September 1970 at the Houston Racquet Club in Houston, Texas. This was the first edition of the tournament, so no defending champions were declared. Yuliya Beygelzimer and Mervana Jugić-Salkić won the title, defeating Gabriela Navrátilová and Michaela Paštiková 6–2, 6–0 in the final. It was the 2nd doubles title for Beygelzimer and the 2nd and final doubles title for Jugić-Salkić, in their respective careers. Michaela Paštiková (born 27 March 1980) is a retired tennis player from the Czech Republic. On 31 January 2005, Paštiková achieved her career-high singles ranking of world No. 89. On 25 July 2005, she peaked at No. 35 of the WTA doubles rankings. Her father introduced her to the game at age three and she was coached by Jiri Fencl. Paštiková preferred playing on clay surfaces. Mervana Jugić-Salkić (born 14 May 1980) is a retired Bosnian tennis player. She turned professional in 1999, and reached her highest singles ranking on 21 June 2004, when she was ranked world No. 99. Anna Smashnova ( he, אנה סמשנובה, russian: Анна Смашнова; born July 16, 1976) is a Soviet-born Israeli former tennis player. She retired from professional tour after Wimbledon 2007. Smashnova reached her career-high singles ranking of world No. 15 in 2003. She reached 13 finals, and won 12 of them.
