Founded in 1955, International Schools Services (ISS) was created as a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting the international and American schools that were proliferating at that time. These schools were developing as a result of the increasing cooperation amongst world nations during this period of pronounced globalization. Background The company was the brainchild of Arthur Sweetser a prolific author, educator, and statesman, who was present in Paris in 1916 at the birth of the League of Nations. His wartime travels as a reporter and ensuing involvement with government officials led him to his activism in promoting global communication through education. In 1924, he joined forces with others of like minds to develop the International School of Geneva and in 1947 the United Nations International School in New York. Arthur Sweetser
Arthur Sweetser (1888–1968) was an international journalist and statesman. Early life Born in 1888, Arthur Sweetser was a member of a generation that saw the nations of the world engaging in violent bloodshed in what was labelled optimistically as the War to End all Wars. This was a period when contemporary principles of international law were first taking form and beginning to be put into practice. League Of Nations
The League of Nations (french: link=no, Société des Nations ) was the first worldwide intergovernmental organisation whose principal mission was to maintain world peace. It was founded on 10 January 1920 by the Paris Peace Conference that ended the First World War. The main organization ceased operations on 20 April 1946 but many of its components were relocated into the new United Nations. The League's primary goals were stated in its Covenant. They included preventing wars through collective security and disarmament and settling international disputes through negotiation and arbitration. Its other concerns included labour conditions, just treatment of native inhabitants, human and drug trafficking, the arms trade, global health, prisoners of war, and protection of minorities in Europe. United Nations International School
The United Nations International School (UNIS) is a private international school in New York City, established in 1947. Many members of the United Nations staff arriving with young families found unexpected difficulties with New York's school system. Among them was K. T. Behanan and his wife, who arrived from India in May 1947 with their 5-year-old son, to work on educational policy at the UN's Trusteeship Council. The Behanans banded together with other UN families who were in a similar situation to establish in 1947 the United Nations International School at Lake Success, with Dr Behanan as chairman of its board.
