Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a group of non-communicable neurological disorders characterized by recurrent epileptic seizures. Epileptic seizures can vary from brief and nearly undetectable periods to long periods of vigorous shaking due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. These episodes can result in physical injuries, either directly such as broken bones or through causing accidents. In epilepsy, seizures tend to recur and may have no immediate underlying cause. Isolated seizures that are provoked by a specific cause such as poisoning are not deemed to represent epilepsy. People with epilepsy may be treated differently in various areas of the world and experience varying degrees of social stigma due to the alarming nature of their symptoms. The underlying mechanism of epileptic seizures is excessive and abnormal neuronal activity in the cortex of the brain which can be observed in the electroencephalogram (EEG) of an individual. ''Epilepsia'' is a peer-reviewed medical journal focusing on all aspects of epilepsy. The journal was established in 1909. It is the official journal of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), The first series was published between 1909 and 1915 in five volumes by an international consortium of seven publishers (Baillière & Fils, Paris; J. A. Barth, Leipzig; J. Lund, Copenhagen; Nordiska Bokhandeln, Stockholm; Scheltema & Holkema’s Boekhandel, Amsterdam; G. E. Stechert & Co, New York; Williams & Norgate, London) and had multilingual contributions (in German, English and French). Editors were Julius Donáth from Hungary und Louis Jacob Josef Muskens from the Netherlands. The second series was published between 1937 and 1950 in 4 volumes with 2 to 4 issues each. ''Epileptic Disorders'' is a peer-reviewed medical journal focusing on quality scientific and educational content related to all aspects of epilepsy including its diagnosis, natural history, and management. The current editor-in-chief is Sandor Beniczky and it is published by John Libbey Eurotext. As of 2021, the impact factor of the journal is 2.333. In 2013, ''Epileptic Disorders'' became the official educational journal of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE). The journal was created in 1999 by Jean Aicardi and Alexis Arzimanoglou. It was built upon a single goal: to diffuse new information on epilepsy through the publication of good articles on all aspects of the epilepsies, from basic investigation to clinical reports, and data from related disciplines such as neuroimaging, genetics, and pharmacology.
