International Inn Hotel (Washington D.C.)
The Wylie Mansion was an American mansion which once stood at 10 Thomas Circle in Washington, D.C. Believed to have been built in 1843, it stood on the northeast section of the circle for over 100 years until a fire destroyed a significant portion of the house on April 20, 1947, and it was demolished. History The mansion was built for Charles L. Coltman, a brick-maker and builder. It became known as the Wylie Mansion, however, when judge Andrew Wylie occupied it while presiding over the trial surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865. The International Inn Hotel was built there in 1962 on a design by architect Morris Lapidus. It still stands on the site following several renovations and alterations, as the Washington Plaza Hotel. Thomas Circle
Thomas Circle is a traffic circle in Northwest Washington, D.C., in the United States. It is located at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue NW, Vermont Avenue NW, 14th Street NW, and M Street NW. It is named for George Henry Thomas, a Union Army general in the American Civil War. History Thomas Circle was constructed as a traffic circle as part of the original L'Enfant Plan for the District of Columbia. The circle was named for American Civil War General George Henry Thomas. A horse-drawn railway installed around the Circle in the mid-1860s led to development to the north. Paved roads and sewers soon followed, and the area quickly attracted wealthy residents. Luther Place Memorial Church was built in 1874 and the Portland Flats built in 1881. Morris Lapidus (November 25, 1902 – January 18, 2001) was an architect, primarily known for his Neo-baroque "Miami Modern" hotels constructed in the 1950s and 60s, which have since come to define that era's resort-hotel style, synonymous with Miami and Miami Beach. A Jewish Ukrainian immigrant based in New York, Lapidus designed over 1,000 buildings during a career spanning more than 50 years, much of it spent as an outsider to the American architectural establishment. Early life and career Born in Odessa in the Russian Empire (now Ukraine), his Orthodox Jewish family fled Russian pogroms to New York when he was an infant.
