International Council Of Nurses
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) is a federation of more than 130 national nurses associations. It was founded in 1899 and was the first international organization for health care professionals. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The organization's goals are to bring nurses' organizations together in a worldwide body, ic status of nurses and the profession of nursing worldwide, and to influence global and domestic health policy. Membership is limited to one nursing organization per nation. In most cases, this is the national nurses' association (such as the American Nurses Association, the Slovak Chamber of Nurses and Midwives or the Nursing Association of Nepal). In 2001, ICN permitted its members to adopt alliance or collaborative structures to be more inclusive of other domestic nursing groups. Sophie Mannerheim
Baroness Eva Charlotta Lovisa Sofia (Sophie) Mannerheim (21 December 1863 – 9 January 1928) was a famous nurse known as pioneer of modern nursing in Finland. She was daughter of count Carl Robert Mannerheim and sister of a former Finnish President, marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, as well as the artist and writer Eva Mannerheim-Sparre. Her career started as a bank employee for 6 years until she married in 1896. After her divorce in 1902 she was trained in nursing at the Nightingale School at St Thomas' Hospital in London. Returning home she was appointed as head nurse of Helsinki Surgical Hospital and later elected President of the Finnish Nurses' Association, a position she had for 24 years. Olive Anstey
Olive Eva Anstey (9 August 1920 – 18 August 1983) was an Australian hospital matron. Born at Fremantle to sawmill benchman Terence Edwin Anstey and Eva Annie, ''née'' Donovan, Olive and her family moved to Sydney when she was eighteen months old. She moved back to Western Australia in 1934, learning shorthand and typing at Perth Technical College before starting work at a box factory in 1935 at the age of 15 (continuing her studies at night). She began training to be a nurse at the Royal Perth Hospital in 1941, despite the disapproval of her family who viewed nursing as "servitude". Alice Girard (1907 – January 1, 1999) was an American-born Quebecoise nurse who was made a Chevalier of the National Order of Quebec for 1994. She was a seventh child born in Connecticut to a family that originated in Quebec. They returned to Quebec when she was 11 and she decided to pursue a career rather than marriage, the two things being seen as somewhat mutually exclusive at that time.
