''Interlocking Forms'' is an outdoor 1977 Indiana Limestone sculpture by Donald Wilson, located in Downtown Portland, downtown Portland, Oregon. Description and history ''Interlocking Forms'' is an Abstract art, abstract geometric sculpture by Donald Wilson, who intended to create "just a human kind of presence in its relation to human beings in the environment". It is made of Indiana Limestone and measures approximately x x . The piece was commissioned by TriMet for $25,000; twenty percent of the funds came from TriMet and eighty percent came from the United States Department of Transportation. It was originally installed in the Transit Mall in 1977, along with ten other sculptures, to make the area "more people oriented and attractive". Its condition was deemed "treatment needed" by the Smithsonian Institution's "Save Outdoor Sculpture!" program in October 1993. Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) was a community-based effort to identify, document, and conserve outdoor sculpture in the United States. The program was initiated in 1989 and ended in 1999. History Save Outdoor Sculpture! was initiated by Heritage Preservation: The National Institute of Conservation in 1989. As of 1998, volunteers had cataloged and assessed the condition of over 30,000 outdoor statues and monuments. Indiana limestone — also known as Bedford limestone in the building trade — has long been an economically important building material, particularly for monumental public structures. Indiana limestone is a more common term for Salem Limestone, a geological formation primarily quarried in south central Indiana, USA, between the cities of Bloomington and Bedford. It has been called the best quarried limestone in the United States. Indiana limestone, like all limestone, is a rock primarily formed of calcium carbonate. It was deposited over millions of years as marine fossils decomposed at the bottom of a shallow inland sea which covered most of the present-day Midwestern United States during the Mississippian Period.
