''Inspector Vargas'' (Italian: ''L'ispettore Vargas'', Spanish: ''El inspector Vargas'') is a 1940 Italian-Spanish crime film directed by Gianni Franciolini and Félix Aguilera and starring Giulio Donadio, Olga Solbelli and Mariella Lotti.Hochkofler p.37 It was made at Cinecittà in Rome, and released in separate Italian and Spanish versions. The film's sets were designed by the art director Salvo D'Angelo. Gianni Franciolini
Gianni Franciolini (1 June 1910 – 1 January 1960) was an Italian film director and screenwriter. He directed 19 films between 1939 and 1959. Life and career Born in Florence, in 1929 he moved to Paris to study journalism; there he came into contact with the artistic avant-garde of the time, particularly with Eugène Deslaw. During this time, he was assistant director of Georges Lacombe and directed the documentary ''Vérité sur l'Italie''. In 1938, he came back in Italy country where he collaborated as a screenwriter and as an assistant director for Camillo Mastrocinque and Mario Soldati, among others. In 1940 he debuted as a feature film director with ''Inspector Vargas''. In the post-war, Franciolini specialized in neo-realist comedies and genre films, often collaborating with Cesare Zavattini. Lauro Gazzolo (born Ilario Gazzolo; 15 October 1900 – 2 October 1970) was an Italian actor and voice actor. Biography Born in Nervi in Genoa, Gazzolo began his career on screen in 1938 starring in the comedy film ''The Document'' and became more successful after the end of World War II. A popular character actor, he appeared in at least 106 films and played many roles between 1939 and 1966. Among his most popular filmography included '' The Jester's Supper'', ''Four Steps in the Clouds'' and ''The Band of Honest Men''. Maria "Mariuccia" Dominiani (10 May 1913 – 10 December 1993) was an Italian actress. Biography Dominiani made her debut on screen in the 1936 film ''Joe the Red'', dedicating herself also to variety shows and photo comics in the following decade. In 1944, she was arrested and imprisoned, after being accused of having collaborated with the Nazis during the fascist regime, but was released from prison because there was no evidence against her. In the 1950s, Dominiani dealt with organizing stage shows, and also played in minor roles in some films until 1961. Dominiani died in Rome on 10 December 1993, at the age of 80.
