Ingebrigt Vik
Ingebrigt Vik (5 March 1867 – 22 March 1927) was a Norwegian sculptor. Vik is regarded as having been one of Norway's greatest sculptors from the first part of the 20th century. Biography Ingebrigt Vik was born in the village of Øystese in the municipality of Kvam, Hordaland county, Norway. He was the son of Hans Gunnarson Tveit (1832–1901) and Ingebjørg Torgeirsdotter Vik (1841–1902). He grew up in Øystese and began as a wood carver in his father's factory. He trained as an artist at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1889 to 1891. After surgery for tuberculosis in his left knee, he returned home to recover. In 1903 he moved to Paris and attended Académie Colarossi where he trained with sculptor Jean Antoine Injalbert. In 1906, he was assigned the Houens legat and studied in Italy. Edvard Grieg
Edvard Hagerup Grieg ( , ; 15 June 18434 September 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the foremost Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use of Norwegian folk music in his own compositions brought the music of Norway to fame, as well as helping to develop a national identity, much as Jean Sibelius did in Finland and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. An academy (Attic Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια; Koine Greek Ἀκαδημία) is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning (and generally also research or honorary membership). The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Torgeir Alvsaker
Torgeir Alvsaker (1875—1971) was a Norwegian architect. Alvsaker was born 9 February 1875 on the Alvsaker farm in Kinsarvik, Norway. He attended the Bergen Technical School and graduated in 1898. He then became an assistant to architect Adolph Fischer in Bergen and then for the architect Holger Sinding-Larsen in Oslo. From 1905 until 1916 he also worked as an architect in the United States. In 1916, he returned to Bergen where he set up his own architecture company. From 1948 to 1969, Alvsaker worked in partnership with architect Einar Vaardal-Lunde, also based in Bergen. He died on 27 November 1971 in Bergen, Norway. In addition to designing houses in residential areas mostly in and around Bergen, he also designed several farm buildings, hospitals, old people's homes, schools, hotels, museums, and churches, working mainly in Western Norway. Niels Henrik Abel
Niels Henrik Abel ( , ; 5 August 1802 – 6 April 1829) was a Norwegian mathematician who made pioneering contributions in a variety of fields. His most famous single result is the first complete proof demonstrating the impossibility of solving the general quintic equation in radicals. This question was one of the outstanding open problems of his day, and had been unresolved for over 250 years. He was also an innovator in the field of elliptic functions, discoverer of Abelian functions. He made his discoveries while living in poverty and died at the age of 26 from tuberculosis. Most of his work was done in six or seven years of his working life. Regarding Abel, the French mathematician Charles Hermite said: "Abel has left mathematicians enough to keep them busy for five hundred years."
