The Inge Morath Award was established by Magnum Photos in tribute to Inge Morath, an Austrian-born photographer who was associated with Magnum for almost fifty years, and who died in January, 2002. Magnum Photos is an international photographic cooperative owned by its photographer-members, with offices in New York City, Paris, London and Tokyo. Inge Morath
Ingeborg Hermine Morath (; 27 May 1923 – 30 January 2002) was an Austrian photographer. In 1953, she joined the Magnum Photos Agency, founded by top photographers in Paris, and became a full photographer with the agency in 1955. Morath was the third wife of playwright Arthur Miller; their daughter is screenwriter/director Rebecca Miller. Biography Early years (1923–1945) Morath was born in Graz, Austria, to Mathilde (Wiesler) and Edgar Morath, scientists whose work took them to different laboratories and universities in Europe during her childhood. Her parents had converted from Catholicism to Protestantism. First educated in French-speaking schools, Morath relocated in the 1930s with her family to Darmstadt, a German intellectual center, and then to Berlin, where Morath's father directed a laboratory specializing in wood chemistry. Magnum Foundation is a non-profit, photographic foundation located in New York City with a mission to expand diversity and creativity in documentary photography. Jessica Dimmock (born June 23, 1978) is a documentary photojournalist and filmmaker based in Brooklyn, New York City. Her body of work, ''The Ninth Floor'', documented the lives of a group of young heroin users over the course of several years. Newsha Tavakolian ( fa, نیوشا توکلیان; born 1981) is an Iranian photojournalist and documentary photographer. Rena Effendi (born April 26, 1977) is an Azerbaijani freelance photographer. Her work focuses on themes of environment, post-conflict society, the effects of oil industry on people, and social disparity. As of 2019, she is based in Istanbul, Turkey. Life Effendi was born April 26, 1977, in Baku. She studied at the Azerbaijan State Institute of Languages. Effendi began photographing in 2001 and became a full-time photographer in 2005 after quitting her job as an Economic Development Specialist at the United States Agency for International Development in Baku. Gabriella Demczuk is a Lebanese-American artist and documentary photographer. Biography Gabriella Demczuk was born in Stockholm, Sweden.
