Infantry Fighting Vehicles
An infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), also known as a mechanized infantry combat vehicle (MICV), is a type of armoured fighting vehicle used to carry infantry into battle and provide direct-fire support. The 1990 Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe defines an infantry fighting vehicle as "an armoured combat vehicle which is designed and equipped primarily to transport a combat infantry squad, and which is armed with an integral or organic cannon of at least 20 millimeters calibre and sometimes an antitank missile launcher". IFVs often serve both as the principal weapons system and as the mode of transport for a mechanized infantry unit. Infantry fighting vehicles are distinct from armored personnel carriers (APCs), which are transport vehicles armed only for self-defense and not specifically engineered to fight on their own. IFVs are designed to be more mobile than tanks and are equipped with a rapid-firing autocannon or a large conventional gun; they may include side ...

BMP-3 Amphibious Infantry Fighting Vehicle
The BMP-3 is a Soviet and Russian infantry fighting vehicle, successor to the BMP-1 and BMP-2. The abbreviation BMP stands for ''boevaya mashina pehoty'' (, literally "infantry combat vehicle"). Production history The design of the BMP-3 ('' Obyekt'' 688M) can be traced back to the ''Obyekt'' 685 light tank prototype with an 2A48-1 100 mm gun from 1975.Zaloga, Steven J., Hull, Andrew W. and Markov, David R. (1999). ''Soviet/Russian Armor and Artillery Design Practices: 1945 to Present''. Darlington Productions. The prototype did not enter series production, but the chassis, with a new engine, was used for the next-generation infantry combat vehicle ''Obyekt'' 688 from A. Blagonravov's design bureau. The Ob. 688's original weapon configuration consisting of an externally mounted Shipunov 2A42 30 mm autocannon, a 7.62mm PKT machine gun and twin ''9M113 Konkurs'' ATGM launcher was rejected; instead the new 2K23 armament system was selected. The resulting BMP-3 was deve ...

BTR-40
The BTR-40 (БТР, from Бронетранспортёр, or '' Bronetransporter'', literally "armoured transporter† is a Soviet non-amphibious, wheeled armoured personnel carrier and reconnaissance vehicle. It is often referred to as the ''Sorokovka'' in Soviet service. It is also the first mass-produced Soviet APC. It was eventually replaced in the APC role by the BTR-152 and in the scout car role by the BRDM-1. Development history The BTR-40's development began in early 1947 at the design bureau of the Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (Gorkovsky Automobile Factory) under the leadership of V. A. Dedkov. The concept was a successor to the BA-64B armoured car which went out of production in 1946. The design team also included L. W. Kostikin and P.I. Muziukin. Two prototypes designated BTR-141 were completed in 1947. The first was armed with two coaxial 14.5 mm KPVT heavy machine guns on a rotatable mount which was protected by armour plate at the front and sides. The second ha ...

AIFV
The AIFV (''Armored Infantry Fighting Vehicle'') is a US tracked light armored vehicle that serves as an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) in the armies of several countries. It is a development of the M113A1 armored personnel carrier. History In 1967, funded by the US Army, the FMC corporation produced two prototype vehicles designated as XM765 - these were based on their experiences with the earlier XM701 vehicle, developed for the MICV-65 program. The XM765 was based on the M113A1, upgraded with an enclosed turret and firing ports, so that the infantry could fight from within the vehicle. The army evaluated the vehicle, but decided that they wanted a better protected and more mobile vehicle, selecting instead the M2 Bradley. FMC continued development as a private venture, resulting in the product improved (PI) M113A1 in 1970. The PI M113A1 had the driver and engine at the front, with an enclosed weapon station in the center of the hull and the commander seated at the rear. ...

Terrängbil M/42 KP
Terrängbil m/42 KP (tgb m/42 KP), meaning "terrain car m/42 KP" (''KP'' standing for ''Karosseri Pansar'', "Coachwork Armour"), colloquially known as "KP-car" ( sv, KP-bil), was a Swedish infantry fighting vehicle developed during World War II. It is at its core a flatbed truck with 4 wheel drive for off-road driving, fitted with an armoured body elongated over and around the bed with a troop transport compartment behind the cabin for a panzergrenadier ( sv, pansarskytte) squad of 16. Due to the wheeled chassis and machine gun armament, the tgb m/42 KP is often called an armoured personnel carrier. This is terminologically incorrect, as the vehicle was purpose built as a first generation infantry fighting vehicle, intended to carry a designated panzergrenadier squad not just into and out of battle, but also during battle as a protected firing position (so called mounted combat), with the ability to off-load troops into its vicinity depending on the situation (so called dism ...

Pansarbandvagn 302
Pansarbandvagn 302 (pbv 302), meaning roughly ''armoured tracked carrier vehicle 302'',), are instead only called wagons (chassis description) to denote that they are tracked but more specialized and less universal. was a Swedish high-mobility infantry fighting vehicle () used by the Swedish Army from 1966 to 2014. The vehicle was commissioned by the Swedish Army in 1961 as a modern IFV-design which could replace the recently developed pbv 301 IFV, a placeholder design based on an obsolete tank chassis which did not meet the Swedish Army's future operational requirements. Design and production was handled by Hägglund & Söner in Örnsköldsvik (today BAE Systems Hägglunds). Production ran from 1966 to 1971 and the vehicles were upgraded and renovated multiple times throughout their service life. The design was eventually replaced by the strf 9040 IFV in the 1990s but saw limited service alongside it until ultimately being removed from service in 2014. Armament consisted of a m ...

Pansarbandvagn 301
Pansarbandvagn 301 (pbv 301), meaning roughly ''armoured tracked carrier vehicle 301'',), are instead only called wagons (chassis description) to denote that they are tracked but more specialized and less universal. was a Swedish infantry fighting vehicle () used by the Swedish Army. It was designed to carry a squad of 8 fully armed panzergrenadiers () into battle and provide direct-fire support for them in combat. The panzergrenadiers could opt to either fight from inside the vehicle through hatches on the roof or dismount the vehicle and fight in its vicinity. The pbv 301 was armed with a Bofors 20 mm belt-fed gun taken from scrapped Saab 21 fighter aircraft. The pbv 301 was an interim solution, built on the chassis from the obsolete stridsvagn m/41 tank (in service since 1942). It was introduced in 1961 and removed from service in the late 1960s and early 1970s when the replacement pbv 302 came into use. The pbv 301 replaced the open-topped Terrängbil m/42 KP IFV as the ...

Swedish Army
The Swedish Army ( sv, svenska armén) is the land force of the Swedish Armed Forces. History Svea Life Guards dates back to the year 1521, when the men of Dalarna chose 16 young able men as body guards for the insurgent nobleman Gustav Vasa in the Swedish War of Liberation against the Danish-dominated Union of Kalmar, thus making the present-day Life Guards one of the world's oldest regiments still on active duty. In 1901, Sweden introduced conscription. The conscription system was abolished in 2010 but reinstated in 2017. Organisation The peace-time organisation of the Swedish Army is divided into a number of regiments for the different branches. The number of active regiments has been reduced since the end of the Cold War. However the Swedish Army has begun to expand once again. The regiment forms training organizations that train the various battalions of the army and home guard. The Swedish Armed Forces recently underwent a transformation from conscription-based ...

Saurer 4K 4FA
The Saurer 4K 4FA is an Austrian armoured personnel carrier with caterpillar tracks. It was later replaced by the Steyr 4K 7FA G 127. It went into production in 1961. History In 1956, the contractor Osterreichische Saurer-Werke from Vienna (which was taken over by Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG in 1970) started development of an armoured personnel carrier. The first prototype, the 3K 3H, was completed in 1958 and the second, the 4K 3H, the following year. They are both powered by a Saurer 3H 200 hp diesel engine. The next model, the 4K 2P, had a different hull layout, a new torsion bar suspension and was powered by a 250 hp Saurer 2P diesel engine. In appearance it was similar to the first production vehicles which were completed in 1961 and designated 4K 4F. Later production vehicles were the 4K 3FA (230 hp) and the 4K 4FA (250 hp), which differed only in minor details such as their Sauer engines. A total of 445 production vehicles was delivered to the Austrian Army ...

AMX-VCI
The AMX-VCI (french: Véhicule de Combat d'Infanterie) is one of the many variants of the French AMX-13 light tank. It was the front line APC of the French Army until replaced by the AMX-10P. It is still used by some countries, for example Mexico, where it goes under the name of DNC-1 and is armed with a 20mm cannon. History Beginning in 1957, some 3,000 vehicles were produced. It was initially produced as the AMX-13 VTT (), which carried ten infantrymen and was armed with either an AA-52 7.62 mm machine gun or a 12.7 mm M2 Browning machine gun in an open mounting. The final versions had a turret equipped with a 20mm light autocannon, producing a vehicle that can be seen as an early example of the infantry fighting vehicle. Variants The AMX-13 VCI itself was the basis for a number of variants: *AMX-VTP: Original APC variant armed with an open-mount light machine-gun *AMX-VTT (AMX-VCI): APC fitted with a turret mounted light machine-gun *AMX-LT: VTT based artillery fire ...
