Indigenous Women's Network
The Indigenous Women's Network (IWN) is a nonprofit organization that provides a platform for Indigenous peoples of the Americas, Indigenous women in the Western Hemisphere. The organization was founded in 1985. IWN focuses on Native women, their families and communities and attempts to help them have sovereignty over themselves and their environment. IWN has published a journal, ''Indigenous Women'', since 1991. This magazine is the first and currently the only magazine written by and for Native women. History Winona LaDuke and Janet McCloud were some of the co-founders of IWN. Nearly 200 Native women activists created the IWN at a gathering hosted by the Northwest Indian Women's Circle in Yelm, Washington, in 1985. Janet McCloud (also known as Yet-Si-Blue; March 30, 1934 – November 25, 2003) was a prominent Native American and indigenous rights activist. Northwest Indian Women's Circle
The points of the compass are a set of horizontal, radially arrayed compass directions (or azimuths) used in navigation and cartography. Yelm () is a city in Thurston County, Washington, United States. Its population was 10,617 at the 2020 census. Women Of All Red Nations
Women of All Red Nations (WARN) was a Native American women's organization. It was established in 1974 by Lorelei DeCora Means, Madonna Thunderhawk, Phyllis Young, Janet McCloud, Marie Sanchez and others. WARN included more than 300 women from 30 different tribal communities. Many of its members had previously been active in the American Indian Movement and were participants in the 1973 Wounded Knee incident. The inaugural conference took place in Rapid City, South Dakota. WARN championed the health of Native American women, the restoration and securing of treaty rights, eliminating Indian mascots for sports teams, and combating the commercialization of Indian culture. They highlighted the high rates of health issues caused by nuclear mining and storage on Indian land, such as birth defects, miscarriages and deaths.
