Indica (Arrian)
''Indica'' ( grc, Ἰνδική ''Indikḗ'') is the name of a short military history about interior Asia, particularly the Indian subcontinent, written by Arrian in the 2nd century CE. The subject of the book is the expedition of Alexander the Great that occurred between 336 and 323 BCE, about 450 years before Arrian. The book mainly tells the story of Alexander's officer Nearchus' voyage from India to the Persian Gulf after Alexander the Great's conquest of the Indus Valley. However, much of the importance of the work comes from Arrian's in-depth asides describing the history, geography, and culture of the Ancient India. Arrian wrote his ''Indica'' in the Ionic dialect, taking Herodotus for his literary mode. Arrian was born in 86 CE, did not visit the Indian subcontinent, and the book is based on a variety of legends and texts known to Arrian, such as the '' Indica'' by Megasthenes. Arrian also wrote a companion text, ''Anabasis''. Of all ancient Greek records available about ...

Indica (Ctesias)
''Indica'' ( grc-gre, Ἰνδικά ''Indika'') is a book by the classical Greek physician Ctesias purporting to describe the Indian subcontinent. Written in the fifth century BC, it is the first known Greek reference to that distant land. Ctesias was the court physician to king Artaxerxes II of Persia, and the book is not based on his own experiences, but on stories brought to Persia by traders, along the Silk Road from Serica, a land north of China and India where domesticated silk originated. Contents The book contains the first known reference to the unicorn, ostensibly an ass in India that had a single 1.5 cubit (27 inch) horn on its head, and introduces the European world to the talking parrot, and falconry, which was not yet practiced in Europe. Among the information apparently conveyed in the book (mostly according to second-hand accounts of its contents): * The Indus river is identified, and described as being up to twenty miles across. * India is heavily populated ...

Indica (Megasthenes)
''Indika'' (Greek: Ἰνδικά; Latin: ''Indica'') is an account of Mauryan India by the Greek writer Megasthenes. The original work is now lost, but its fragments have survived in later Greek and Latin works. The earliest of these works are those by Diodorus Siculus, Strabo ('' Geographica''), Pliny, and Arrian ('' Indica''). Reconstruction Megasthenes' ''Indica'' can be reconstructed using the portions preserved by later writers as direct quotations or paraphrase. The parts that belonged to the original text can be identified from the later works based on similar content, vocabulary and phrasing, even when the content has not been explicitly attributed to Megasthenes. Felix Jacoby's ''Fragmente der griechischen Historiker'' contains 36 pages of content traced to Megasthenes. E. A. Schwanbeck traced several fragments to Megasthenes, and based on his collection, John Watson McCrindle published a reconstructed version of ''Indica'' in 1887. However, this reconstruction i ...

Cannabis Indica
''Cannabis indica'' is an annual plant species in the family Cannabaceae which produces large amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and is cultivated for purposes including hashish in India. The high concentrations of THC provide euphoric effects making it popular for use both as a recreational drug, alternative medicine, and a clinical research drug. Taxonomy In 1785, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck published a description of a second species of ''Cannabis'', which he named ''Cannabis indica''. Lamarck based his description of the newly named species on plant specimens collected in India. Richard Evans Schultes described ''C. indica'' as relatively short, conical, and densely branched, whereas '' C. sativa'' was described as tall and laxly branched. Loran C. Anderson described ''C. indica'' plants as having short, broad leaflets whereas those of ''C. sativa'' were characterized as relatively long and narrow.
