State Road 558 (SR 558) is a State Road in the southwestern section of the U.S. state of Indiana. Running for about in a general east–west direction, connecting the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division with U.S. Route 231 (US 231), passing through the town of Crane. SR 558 was originally introduced in the 1950s to connect the Crane Naval Depot, now Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division with SR 45, now US 231. Route description SR 558 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 231 and State Road 58 in rural Daviess County. The road heads east before curving southeast. The SR 558 designation ends at the Daviess–Martin county line, at the western town limits of the town of Crane. The continues east as a local road passing through the town of Crane and entering the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division. Madison Township, Daviess County, Indiana
Madison Township is one of ten townships in Daviess County, Indiana. As of the 2010 census, its population was 2,840 and it contained 1,233 housing units. History Madison Township was organized in 1823 and given the name of "Wallace Township". It had first been settled about two years before; the first pioneer was Baldwin Howard, whose initial residence was about south of the present town of Odon. Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division
Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division (NSWC Crane Division) is the principal tenant command located at Naval Support Activity Crane (NSA Crane). NSA Crane is a United States Navy installation located approximately southwest of Bloomington, Indiana, and predominantly located in Martin County, but small parts also extend into Greene and Lawrence counties. It was originally established in 1941 under the Bureau of Ordnance as the Naval Ammunition Depot for the production, testing, and storage of ordnance under the first supplemental Defense Appropriation Act. Daviess County is a county in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 31,648. The county seat is Washington. About 15% of the county's population is Amish of Swiss origin, as of 2017. History After the American Revolutionary War was settled, the fledgling nation created the Northwest Territory, tentatively divided into two counties. The area that would become the state of Indiana in 1816 was included in the original Knox County. As the area became more settled, Knox was partitioned into smaller counties, the last of which was the present-day Daviess, authorized on 2 February 1818. The boundaries of Daviess were reduced on 21 December 1818 by the formation of Owen County, and on 17 January 1820 by the formation of Martin County. It has retained its present boundary since 1820. Crane is a town in Perry Township, Martin County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 184 at the 2010 census. State Road 45 is a state route from Bean Blossom, Indiana to Scotland, Indiana in the southern half of the state. Route description From Bean Blossom and through Brown County, State Road 45 is a narrow, shoulderless two-lane road that passes between the Morgan-Monroe State Forest and the Yellowwood State Forest. As the road passes into Monroe County, the woods disappear and farms and homes begin to line the road. The road remains hilly and curvy until it reaches Bloomington, where it bypasses the city concurrent with State Road 46 and then State Road 37 and Interstate 69. West of Bloomington, shoulders appear on State Road 45 and its two lanes become wider.
