Indian Locomotive Class WCP-3
The Indian locomotive class WCP-3 is a class of 1.5 kV DC electric locomotives that was developed in late 1920s by Hawthorn Leslie for Indian Railways. The model name stands for broad gauge (W), Direct Current (C), Passenger traffic (P) engine, 3rd generation (3). They entered service in 1930. A single WCP-3 was built at England between 1928 and 1929. The WCP-1 served both passenger trains for over 40 years. With the introduction of more modern types of locomotives and 25 KV AC electrification, all were withdrawn by early 1960s. Today the locomotive is scrapped. R. & W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Company, Limited, usually referred to as Hawthorn Leslie, was a shipbuilder and locomotive manufacturer. The company was founded on Tyneside in 1886 and ceased building ships in 1982. History The company was formed by the merger of the shipbuilder A. Leslie and Company in Hebburn with the locomotive works of R and W Hawthorn at St. Peter's in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1886. The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an English railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Class EE1 (''Electric Express 1'') was an electric locomotive commissioned by the North Eastern Railway in 1922. Ownership passed to the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923 and to British Railways in 1948. It was an electrically powered locomotive in the pre- TOPS period.
