Independent Olympic Athletes At The 2016 Summer Olympics
Independent Olympic athletes competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. The team was composed of Kuwaiti athletes who competed under the Olympic flag, as the Kuwait Olympic Committee had been suspended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the second time in five years due to governmental interference. In addition to the independent athletes, ten refugees were scheduled to compete under the Olympic flag as the Refugee Olympic Team, which constituted a separate team. Kuwaiti shooter Fehaid Al-Deehani became the first independent athlete to win a gold medal. Medalists Background The Kuwaiti Olympic Committee was suspended due to interference from the government. Saud Habib ( ar, سعود حبيب; born January 4, 1979, in Kuwait City) is a Kuwaiti sport shooter. He represented his nation Kuwait in two editions of the Olympic Games (2000 and 2016), and also won a bronze medal in men's skeet shooting at the 2000 ISSF World Cup meet in New Delhi, India. Khaled Al-Mudhaf
Khaled Al-Mudhaf ( ar, خالد المضف; born 12 June 1978) is a Kuwaiti sport shooter. He captured the men's trap title at the 2002 ISSF World Championships in Lahti, Finland, and finished in the top six respectively on two successive editions of the Olympic Games (2000 and 2004). The men's trap at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place on 7–8 August 2016 at the National Shooting Center. There were 33 competitors from 24 nations. The event was won by Croatian Josip Glasnović. It was the second consecutive victory for Croatia, with Giovanni Cernogoraz taking gold in 2012 (he finished 9th this time).
