Independence Park (Tel Aviv)
Independence Park is a park in Tel Aviv, Israel located along the coast near the Hilton Tel Aviv hotel. History Independence Park is at the western end of Hayarkon Street in the Old North of Tel Aviv. The first trees were planted on Israel's first Independence Day in 1949. The official opening was in 1952. In 2009, the park was renovated as part of Tel Aviv's centennial anniversary celebrations. The site on which the park now stands was formerly a limestone hill. During the British Mandate, part of the area was used as a military base. Hilton Tel Aviv belongs to the international hotel chain Hilton. It was refurbished and now is a standard higher than the average Hilton hotel. Location The hotel is located in the Independence Park, with direct access to the Hilton Public Beach and the Tel Aviv Promenade, in the heart of Tel Aviv. History Construction work began on September 13, 1962. The building was built by architect Yaakov Rechter, in the style of late modernism. During its construction three workers were killed. The official opening of the hotel took place on 13 September 1965 with the participation of Prime Minister Levi Eshkol. It was the biggest and most modern hotel in town. In 1982, the International Conference on the Holocaust and Genocide took place in the hotel. In 1970 the building underwent major upgrades. The ''Altalena'' Affair was a violent confrontation that took place in June 1948 by the newly created Israel Defense Forces against the Irgun (also known as IZL), one of the Jewish paramilitary groups that were in the process of merging to form the IDF. The confrontation involved a cargo ship, the ''Altalena'', captained by ex-US Navy lieutenant Monroe Fein and led by senior IZL commander Eliyahu Lankin, which had been loaded with weapons and fighters by the independent Irgun, but arrived during the murky period of the Irgun's absorption into the IDF.
